I proceeded as per my earlier post here. As planned, did a night halt in Udaipur.
Day 1 - Followed same route as mentioned above. Left at 5:30 am from Pune and reached Udaipur hotel at 9 pm.
Heavy truck traffic from Thane(Vasai bridge) till Vadodara where we left NH48.
Vadodara - Halol- Godhra is nothing to write home about.
Godhra- Modasa- Samalaji awesome 4 lane state highway free for cars.
Samalaji to Udaipur bypass is further beautiful stretch.
Distance covered - 878 kms .

Day2 - route followed as mentioned in earlier post. Left at 6 am and reached Abohar by 7:30 PM.
Udaipur - Nathdwara is a beautiful 4 lane stretch(NH58).
Nathdwara - Beawar is dual carriageway with less traffic.
Beawar- Kishangarh is a proper 4/6 lane highway.
Kishangarh- Sardarshahar- Pallu is dual carriageway with toll (cash) and badly maintained roads. Better to avoid.
Route improves from Pallu- Hanumangarh to RJ- PB border.
Distance covered - 760kms. Total around 1640 kms.

Refuelled twice on day 1 from Shell in Gujarat to take benefit of lower fuel prices. Accordingly, refuelled once in RJ on day 2 from Reliance and reached home safely.

I totally agree. I did the same stretch a couple of days back and the route till vapi is pathetic. I left Ghodbunder around 11am ish and was at Vapi McDonalds around 2pm. Distance in kms is not much but the traffic is a big pain. After that the route is a breeze though. I stayed the night 40kms before Surat as I had some issue with my car, left next morning around 7am and managed to reach Jaipur by 930PM.
The only place where the route is bad is after Ahmedabad which has single lane for 5-7kms and then aftre Upadpur towards Chittorgarh again single lane for 5-7kms. Other than that the route is a breeze though.
I have the GPS track is anyone is interested please let me know.
Cheers

@HVK sir, your travel details were a bible for me. Thanks for doing all the hardwork and managing to jot down all the details.
I did BLR-PUNE, PUNE-VAPI, VAPI-JAIPUR & JAPIUR-DEL. Will be puting up he details shortly.
Cheers

Hello, I'd be extremely appreciative if you can share the GPS track with me!

Hi Friends, planning a road trip from Mumbai to Rajasthan this October, the week before Diwali. I know this is a little early but wanted to do the bookings in July and try to avoid last hour rush. I plan to do the trip in my 2017 City as per the following:

Day 1: Mumbai to Udaipur - 740 kms - Udaipur only for overnight stay
Day 2: Udaipur to Jodhpur - 250 kms - 2 night stay at Jodhpur
Day 4: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer - 280 kms - 1 or 2 night stay at Jaisalmer
Day 5: Jaisalmer to Jodhpur - 280 kms - only for night stay
Day 6: Jodhpur to Jaipur - 340 kms - 2/3 night stay in Jaipur
Day 9: Jaipur to Bhopal - 600 kms

My query is how safe are the roads, wont be doing night drives, will mostly start in mornings or afternoons and reach the destination by evening. I will be with my wife and two daughter - 6 and 10 yrs old.

Another query is should I do Jaisalmer to Jaipur directly or better to have an overnight halt at Jodhpur.

Do suggest if this route looks fine or any alternatives should be explored.

Thanks in advance!

For Mumbai to Udaipur

Take Mumbai -Surat -Bharuch - Baroda - Godhra- Modasa - Shrinathji route. This is prefect route with 80% four lane Road. Very safe !!

Hi all,

I just did 2 back to back trips from Mumbai to Gujarat in the last 10 days and have a word of caution for the drivers on this route.

The NH48 is riddled with extremely dangerous potholes all the way from Mumbai to Bharuch. The section near Vapi town and especially while approaching Surat city all the way to Bharuch is in very poor condition with the surface tarmac giving up and reallly massive potholes, please be extremely cautious on this route to avoid any damage to your vehicle. The potholes especially on the flyovers are really troublesome and come up on all lanes.

Thanks for the caution. have to bring my sedan back from Jaipur this weekend. Can't delay it. Any word on the flood situation - also heard Palghar is heavily flooded.

Anyone else driven through the area over the last week with more updates, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

There are 2 major diversion one near ankleshwar and one near surat . both for new flyover constructions. Both these combined will add atleast 45 minutes to your travel time. Also the major block at Ghodbunder creek while entering Mumbai is a pain, last time I spent 1.5 hrs stuck there. God knows when we will see the end of it. My suggestion would be to do this trip in daylight and avoid night drives on this stretch.

Seems that the highway to Gujarat is closed.

Drove down to Chandigarh from Mumbai again this year. These Diwali trips to hometown are becoming annual drives and we absolutely love them! Quick updates on the route we took, which was way better than the ones we used previously.

Udaipur to Jaipur: This time Google Maps guided us to use the new highway going through Bhilwara. This one avoids Ajmer and merges on Ajmer-Jaipur highway. Great 6 lane highway throughout with minimal traffic. Absolutely gem of a drive.

Jaipur to Chandigarh: Google Maps again diverted us from Kothputli (~1 hour after Jaipur) towards a new highway which bypasses entire 'GT Road' traffic and merges at Ambala Chandigarh highway. Again an excellent highway to drive on. It is 6 lane almost till Ambala barring the last 30 odd kms which are 4 laned with proper divider and a smooth tarmac.

Overall it saved us about 2-3 hours of drive time. We covered Udaipur to Chandigarh in 12 hours with 2 quick breaks on the way. Only downside is that there is hardly anything to have a quick pit stop on any of these highways.

However, we are eagerly waiting for Mumbai-Delhi Expressway to open up and experience it ourselves next year (fingers crossed). One quick note about T-Roc. "This car is the best expense we ever made." Such words coming from my wife made the drive even more exciting :)

Hello,

Thank you Team-BHP for creating this wonderful ecosystem and thank you members for being the inspiration.

My first post here and it’s a route question.

I am undertaking second of my solo driving long distance road trips to end the year and begin the new one. My earlier trips have been to Pune, Kolhapur and beyond mostly on the Mumbai Bangalore highway. Max Km covered in a day is 550 km. My companion on my trips is my blue rocket aka Altroz i-Turbo

This time I am heading north to visit friends at the end of December.
Day 1 Mumbai (western suburbs) to Ahmedabad / Udaipur
Day 2 Ahmedabad / Udaipur – Jaipur)
Day 3 Jaipur – Hisar
Day 4 Hisar
Day 5 Hisar – Amritsar
Day 6 Return to Mumbai
Day 7 Return to Mumbai
Day 8 Return to Mumbai
Day 9 Return to Mumbai

I would really appreciate guidance on the route to take onward from Mumbai to Udaipur. I hope to leave early by 6 am.

Google shows two options :
1. Taking highway no 48 up to Vadodara golden chokdi and then Taking right on to highway 87 going through Halol, Godhra and joining highway 48 at Samalaji onto Udaipur 747Km 14.30 hrs.
2. Taking highway 48 all the way via NE 1 and Ahmedabad. – 762 KM and 15 hrs

Personally I feel option 2 is better as I can see more rest areas/ restaurants along this route and also if I feel tired and cannot continue past Ahmedabad/ Gandhinagar, both offer seemingly good options for night stay along the highway. I travel atleast once a week by road upto Manor so have some familiarity with the road until there.

Another question I have as a solo female driver is the Jaipur Hisar stretch which takes me from NH 48 up to after Kotputli and then on to Highway 148B up to Narnaul and joining the Narnaul Ambala highway 152D finaly landing me at NH 9 near Kharkhara. Would you recommend that instead I stick to NH 48 and join the WPH and turn onto NH 9 at the exit towards Rohtak. The difference in distance is about 60km and add 2 hrs if I go via Rohtak.

My return route will be based on my experiences on my onward travel.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Hey Mgdoodler,

Welcome to the forum!

As I answer your queries, I am assuming your end destination is Amritsar, and all the stops are just convenient places and you don't have a specific agenda there.

Firstly, going to Udaipur, its best to take the Baroda-Halol-Godhra-Modassa route. No point reaching Udaipur via Ahmedabad. This route is good, has plenty of good sized towns, and I can always recommend you rest stops. Halol is an industrial town and fairly decent hotels.
Your next day drive from Udaipur to Jaipur goes via 100 kms of 2 lane road between Nathdwara & Beawar, which is being expanded to 4 lanes. When I travelled here this March, road quality itself was good even as work had picked up. Some folks tend to avoid this route, but not to worry overall.
A good place to stay in Udaipur is Hotel Paras Mahal.

However, if the goal is to reach Jaipur in 2 days, and you are keen to take Ahmedabad route, then the best way is to either stop at Ahmedabad itself on Day 1, or stretch to Abu Road and stay at Hotel Srijan Inn (my parents have stayed there, and is recommended by quite a few other BHPians too). The roads are always a minimum of 4 lanes on this route, and I personally love the stretch once you enter RJ from Abu Road to Pali to Beawar. I took this route in Jan and have written about it here .

For either of the routes, I will recommend leaving Mumbai by 5 am. It allows for better crossing time at Surat before the rush gets in. in My own experience, the difference between 5 am and 6 am starts leads to over 2 hours difference (so an extra hour gets added at a min) towards end destination.

The second part of the query is from Jaipur to Amritsar. Unless you really want to go to Hisar, you can even do it in one day, though that might be a stretch in winters (esp as it can smog/fog) and if you aren't used to 12 hour drives.

The best way, now that we have Trans-Haryana Expressway (which is what you refer to in your post), is to take left after you cross Kotputli and join this expressway at Narnaul and take the exit either for Hisar or go ahead and directly go to Amritsar. Make sure to tank up before you join the highway (though I hear one-two Petrol pumps have begun operations).

I won't recommend NH48, WPH to bypass Delhi as the highway gets super busy as you get closer to NCR. The new Trans Haryana Expressway should serve you well.

For the return leg, if you are feeling adventurous, then take the Amritsar --> Bikaner --> Jodhpur --> Pali --> Ahmedabad --> Mumbai route. Else, stick to a variation of the route taking you up North!

Good luck and enjoy the drive

Cheers!

Thank you for your very clear guidance.

Hisar is the end destination. Amtrisar is a overnight trip ex Hisar.

Jaipur stopover going and coming back is for some work that needs to be attended to.

I am staying at Hotel Paras Mahal in Udaipur - its the most recommended on the forum.

Please let me have your recommendations for the rest stops along the Baroda-Halol-Godhra-Modassa Route.

Also please let me have recommended petrol pumps on the Koputli - Narnaul route before we get on the Trans Haryana Expressway.

Thanks

At Halol, my family has stayed at Hotel Sarvottam and were happy with it.
At Godhra, Hotel Luxura is recommended from folks I know, though I or my family hasn't stayed in. I had kept it as option for parent's drive, but they drove further till Halol and stayed at Sarvottam on their last trip.

BTW, it seems many folks also prefer the Bhilwara-Kishangarh route between Udaipur and Jaipur these days instead of the route I mentioned in my post above. So you can take a call for that too (even Google shows its 30 mins faster as I check it right now).

About petrol pumps before the Trans Haryana Highway, I don't have any specific reco. You can tank up at Kotputli or just as you enter HR, you will see many petrol pumps lined up (due to cheaper fuel in HR vs RJ) till you come to Narnaul bypass.

Thanks VT-RNS,

There is a small change in plans and I will leave a day later from Mumbai. I will have travelled on the previous day from Pune as I have to attend to some work.

I am not sure that I will be able to drive upto Udaipur as planned but I do want to cover as much distance as possible.

I have noted your recommendation for hotel Luxura at Godhra. Any recommendations for hotels in Modassa/ Samlaji. This will help me as I have to reach Jaipur the next day by 4 PM.
Also would you recommend the RTDC hotel at Ratanpur - Gujrat Rajasthan border.

Thanks

I am not aware of hotels in Modassa/Samlaji. Also think they are relatively smaller towns, so the quality of hotels might dip further, though I am not worried about Safety (GJ is quite good). I would recommend stay in Baroda bypass or Halol or max Godhra and better to take an early start the next day with ample rest (as the Mumbai-Godhra drive will not take too long).
If you do start early, make sure to have water/pantry loaded as things might not open up early on the route.

Ditto with the RTDC hotel. Have no clue about it. Since its RTDC, security should be good but definitely do read reviews etc (the usual checks!)
