You have good roads from Bangalore till Arkalgud. Arkalgud-Mallipatna (10 kms) is a narrow and potholed stretch. From Mallipatna to Madikeri, it is a decent road which has been patched up in places.

Amp, from what I heard, Hassan-Gorur-Arkalgud is still pothole ridden.
Sorry Addy for the slip. I meant what you just mentioned and not Hassan.

Re: Planning on trip to coorg.

Stumbled upon this while searching for the best route to Coorg. I will also be visiting Coorg this weekend. Leaving Bangalore at 6am. I would prefer the Mysore highway and then hit Hunsur and towards Coorg. We will be having a college re-union at a friend's estate there! Its been ages since I went there. The Mysore highway is preferred by me as it has numerous eateries and I feel safer when there is more civilization.

Cheers!
Rohan

Route Recommendations: Monsoon Coorg Trip

I am planning to take my family on an early monsoon trip covering various parts of Coorg. My plan currently looks like this.
  1. Bangalore (Malleswaram)
  2. Mysore (night halt)
  3. Harangi Dam
  4. Somwarpet (night halt)
  5. Mallalli Falls
  6. Bhagamandala
  7. Talakaveri
  8. Madikeri (night halt)
  9. Abbey Falls
  10. Bangalore
I have not yet decided where I will stay; probably some home stays at Madikeri and Somwarpet. I would like to know the following:
  • Is it reasonable to think that I can cover all these places in 4-5 days?
  • Are all the places listed above worth seeing?
  • What are some good home stays (or hotels) in Coorg that I can plan to stay at?
  • Any tips / advice regarding road conditions, routes that I should use / avoid?
Thanks in advance,
Swaroop

Its the same:
- 4-laned Hassan highway till Channarayapatna
- Exit 4 lane to the town.
- Take the road to Holenarasipur
- And there on to Arkalgud.

As regards to places, you can visit Hemavathy reservoir at Gorur and the Shettihalli church on the river.

The road is superb all the way till Arkalgud as Ampere has already mentioned.

This is the Gmaps link for the route.

Regarding places to see, the Hemavathi reservoir at Gorur is about 7 kms from Arkalgud. Road is bad though. There is a famous temple in Ramanathapura (approx 20 kms) on the banks of the Cauvery river. Again this road is supposed to be bad from what I've heard recently.
