Akluj to Shirwal was a bit time consuming as it was a mix of double / single roads + construction etc.
Where did you deviate towards Pandharpur from Vijayapura? Is it at Zalki > Chadchan > Pandharpur OR Solapur > Mohol > Pandharpur?

I am interested in this routing coz it avoids the bad sections of NH48 + Traversing across Pune City.

Also, couldn't we avoid Akluj by taking 965 via Velapur > Phaltan > Lonand > Shirwal?

Two routes to reach Pandharpur from NH50 - one through Vijapypura-Mangalwedha and other through Zalki-Mangalwedha. I had taken the latter and is documented in this post.

The Akluj route via NH65 is a longer route in terms of Kms and time but I am told is a better road.

Thanks W@SIM and Vivek95, then via Solapur it is.

Yes, I know. But I prefer it than the day time drive from Pune to Kolapur hugged by 2 Wheelers and sugarcane tractor trailers.
Took this trip last week.

Left Navi Mumbai on 20th Dec, 7 PM. Faced heavy traffic at Pune even at midnight (unlike my last trip crossing Pune at 7-8 AM). After that it was event less. Took Breakfast at Kamat, Ilkal. It was good though it requires a 5 min detour from signaled junction at Ilkal.

On return trip on 25th/26th Dec, though Google was showing one hour less via Belgaum, we took Bijapur route. Took breakfast at Nandagokula, Kushtagi and it was ok. Since we crossed Bijapur by 2 PM, I thought of exploring Pandharpur route (like whizzing past sleepy rural towns, boy how I was wrong) . A travel from Zalki on NH50 to Shirwal on NH48 is actually a time travel. One can experience transition of road transport from Independence to now. This route has all types of road and all type of vehicles. However, I may not take this route again as
a) driving through SH and rural roads after a long effortless highway drive is difficult
b) Even for a 3 pm to 5 pm slot, there were heavy 2W, 4W and multi-W tractor traffic
c) Lot of unsafe driving

Route taken was Zalki>Mangalwdea>Pandharpur>Malshiras>Phaltan>Lona rd>Shirwal City

Shirwal to Pune was smooth sailing (though traffic) with a brief jam at Wakad and event less drive till Navi Mumbai.

I must say, most probably for my upcoming trip, I will choose Kolhapur route unless Pune crossing comes at odd hours.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Drove back from Navi Mumbai to Bangalore via Pune - Satara - Kolhapur - Belagavi - Hubballi - Chitradurga - Bangalore.

Started early around 4 am, got stuck in traffic jam in Mumbai - Pune Expressway for 35 mins, stopped for breakfast in Satara around 7:50 am. Heavy traffic between Satara - Kolhapur with frequent diversions and speed breakers. Managed to reach Aimangala around 5 pm for snacks break. Last 80 kms before Whitefield took 3.5 hours, felt like crazy. Reached home at 9:10 pm.

You mean Nelamangala at 5PM? This is like 13 Hours from Mumbai > B'lore, considering the road conditions between Satara <> Belgaum, it's a good feat.

Did you not take the STRR to reach Whitefield via Hoskote?

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Completed a round trip Bangalore to Pune. Sharing details so it helps others planning (esp with family, kids and/or pets).
  • Considerations: Was travelling with a <1 yr old and a pet dog hence opted for overnight stay and also multiple breaks in between.
  • Route: Bangalore (north) -> Satellite Ring Road -> Tumakuru/Davangere -> Hubli -> Belgavi -> Kolhapur - Satara -> Pune
  • Tried and tested route, had done this in a day in Jan 2023.
  • Car used: VW Tiguan
  • Fuel: XP95
  • Onward journey: 20/21 Dec
  • 20th Dec - 540 kms
  • Start at 530 am, reached Hubli 1 Pm. Stopped for breakfast at A2B Sira. Fuel at IOCL COCO Hirehalli in Tumkur. Stayed overnight hence went into the city (added almost 30mins to the journey).
  • 21st Dec - 430kms
    • Start at 530 am, reached Pune at 3PM. Avoided Hubli to Dharwad 1 lane, took SH73 connecting into NH48 after Dharwad. However, surprisingly so, met with bad fog until Belgavi which delayed the progress.
    • Roads till Kolhapur and Satara are full of diversions, but manageable in sparse traffic in the early morning.
    • Stops at Amar only veg just before Nipani and then at Haldiram’s in Kolhapur. (Note: there’s McD, Starbucks, Burger King too in the vicinity).
    • Fuel at a random BPCL pump after Karad as couldn’t find IOCL with XP95 and was low on fuel.
  • Return journey: 28/29 Dec
    • 28th Dec - 575 kms
    • Start at 530 am, reached Davangere for overnight stop at 5PM
    • Breaks at Radha Krishna Pure Veg after Karad, Amar only veg, Kamat veg restaurant Chabi after Hubli.
    • Fuel at IOCL Swagat (COCO) in Dharwad.
    • Tip: got caught by cops for driving at 57kmph as I was going into Davangere for overnight stay. Supposedly the speed limit is 40kmph.
    • Roads are better till Kolhapur (some portions getting completed). Many diversions till Belgavi but the traffic was quite less, hence was easily manageable.
    • 29th Dec - 300 kms
    • Start at 530 am, reached Bangalore at 10am. One stop only at A2B Devanhalli.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Did Mumbai -Kundapur-Goa-Mumbai
Started from Mumbai 4.15am on 20th December took MPEW reached 7.30am at Satara Kamat for Breakfast , Took the old trusted Mumbai bangalore Highway the deviations are well surfaced in Maharashtra but a little rough in Karnataka stopped for an early lunch at 12.30pm at Viraj Junction Kognolli toll. Travelled thru hubli dharwad by pass the road was smooth not much of traffic , then on to kalghatki yellapur ankola to kundapur, the curves on arebail ghat is patchy and rough rest all good. reached kundapur at 7.30 pm
On the whole if you are planning trip to Mangalore this route is not Bad.

Return journey took a break at Goa

North goa onwards took the butter smooth highway upto ONI , then via Pachal to Anuskura Ghat, Malkapur, Karad. Mind you this strectch doesnt have any good restaurants or clean toilets. Anuskura ghat is a narrow and steep ghat not for beginners but is very scenic with excellent tarmac. had late lunch at satara reached mumbai at 8pm, 11 hours journey from north goa.

No, I took Tumkuru - Nelamangala - Hebbal - Whitefield.

From where to take STRR to reach Whitefield? Is it faster?

Travelers between these cities have really stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I'll put like this.

5AM start from Bangalore will get you to

1) Belgaum by 3 PM with 9~10 Hrs drive. Ready to drive this known route with good food and fuel places further 200 KM to Satara in 5 Hrs with 40KMPH but with innumerable diversions?

2) Bijapur by 2 PM with 9~10 Hrs drive. Ready to explore through this unknown rural/semi-rural route further 300 KM to Shirwal in 6 Hrs with 50 KMPH?

3) Pune Hadaspar by 8 PM with 14~15 Hrs drive. Ready to drive through Pune city through peak traffic further 50 KM to MP EWay in 2 Hrs with 30 KMPH?

Tip: No matter what time you query GMaps, it always shows NH 48. I think a good GC vehicle with a spirited driver can take this route easily.

You could take the STRR from Dabaspet after Tumkur but before Nelamangala. The route is Dabaspet-Devanahalli-Hoskote-Whitefield. This route bypasses the choc-o-block city route.

More details on the route are in this thread.

At Dobbaspet. Sadly, no signages there. One has to rely on Gmaps.

Definitely faster. It is a tolled road.

Thanks, I will try this route next time. Last 80 kms before Whitefield are always pain in the evening/night time. Hopefully this bypass route provides the much needed respite from traffic and serves as a faster one.
