Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

I am planning a road trip this weekend from Pune to Coorg by car. Thinking of taking a halt at Davanagere. Leaving Pune at 5 am. I have two queries.

1. Which route I should take? Pune - Solapur- Davanagere or Pune - Kolhapur- Davanagere?
2. Night halt should be at Davanagere or Hassan?

Any suggestions on decent accommodation?

1. You will find Davangere in the Pune Kolhapur-Belgavi route and not on the Pune- Solapur route. The route selection also depends on which side of Pune are you starting from. Even if you are starting from West side of Pune, you can still use the Vijaypura - Chitradurga stretch via Pandharpur and Zalki.

2. If starting at 5 am in the morning, you should reach Hassan by the end of the day. Alternatively Chitradurga would be a good stop in either of the route selected. However you will need to go into the city to find good rest point. Fellow BHPians can share good accomodations for Chitradurga.

Pune - Solapur - Bijapur - Hospet - Chitradurga (Night Halt) is a better option. You can check out Hotel Naveen Regency at Chitradurga which is located alongside the highway for an overnight halt.

Hi Gaurav, if your question is about choosing between Pune-Kolhapur-Belgaum versus Pune-Solapur-Hospet routes, then I can tell you my preference based on trying both routes last year. The advantage of the Pune-Solapur route is that you get very good roads all the way with far less traffic. However, the bad thing is that you have very limited good food and rest options. So it needs some amount of planning and sticking to it especially with regards to stopovers. The Pune-Kolhapur route on the other hand has an abundance of quality food and rest options. But as many of our fellow members have pointed out there are sections that slow you down due to bad road conditions.

But, like I said my priority is the convenience of having high quality food and rest option and it overrides the lack of driving pleasure and increased time on road when traveling with family. They appreciate the convenience of decent food and clean restrooms more than the extra hour or two of journey time. We had a hard time last year finding a decent lunch place on the Pune-Solapur route because we ran late and couldn't make it to our predetermined lunch stop. That is never an issue with the Pune-Kolhapur route due to the abundance of good restaurants all along the route.

However, that's just my view of it. Please pick your route based on your preference. Hope this helps.

Our experience has been that - while roads are good, the traffic on Pune-Solapur section was not great. 2+2 lane mostly, too. Does not feel like a proper highway on this section. However, agree on the food part, but can be done with a little search here and planning start time.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

For my Bengaluru to Gujarat journey, I wanted to explore alternative route so instead of regular NH48 via Pune and Mumbai, I took the Bengaluru-solapur-beed-Aurangabad route. The distance of approx 960 km from Bengaluru to Aurangabad took 13.5 hrs in my Honda city sedan. I started on 26th April morning at 4am from Hennur road and took the STRR near Devanahalli and joined the NH48 at Dobbaspet. After a coffee break at Shell Sira, continued till Chitradurga and then took the NH50 towards Hosapete. I had planned to stop for breakfast at AnandVihar near Hosahalli however it was closed.

Somehow I missed the NH50 turn near Hosalli/Hitnal toll and landed up on NH67 going towards Ginigera/Koppal. After realizing the error took a U turn and came back on NH50. I could not find any decent restaurants for breakfast and restroom. I stopped at Kyriad Prestige, Ilkal for breakfast. From outside it looks like a decent hotel with restaurant. However does not live up with regards to breakfast and cleanliness. NH50 and later NH52 is mostly 4 lanes and the common issues are of speed breakers in some stretch, lack of decent establishment for food or restrooms and because of four lanes you really drop your speed when two trucks occupy both the lanes trying to decide who can get ahead. Once crossing over to MH side the options for food stops are more compared to KA. Stopped for lunch at Food town after Dharshiv (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hEkdh4DNdAbzk6G79).

I would highly recommend it for the food. Reached Aurangabad hotel at 5.30pm for a night halt. From here I have two options to take the Aurangabad-Nashik-Saputara route to enter Gujarat and I have done Nashik-Saputara several times before. However I am trying a different route tomorrow via Dhule-Navapur-Songadh. Overall a good alternative to NH48 if you plan to halt at Aurangabad. If you can pre-plan your break options I think this route is good option as I felt the overall traffic is less compared to NH48 and it completely avoids the Pune and Mumbai/Thane traffic madness.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Dear members,
Leaving for Kerala on the 18th of May. Last June, took NH48 itself and the diversions were very bad atleast until Belgaum. Of lately, I've heard the diversion have become better. Any advice??

Very well said, my experience after traveling extensively on both these routes over the past 2 years has been the same.
Pune Solapur road quality is better with less traffic post Bhigwan but food and rest options especially for family are negligent, it needs to be planned with military accuracy. Family prefers Pune Kolhapur Belgav route even though its slower due to work in progress.
Another thing I have noticed is local traffic on Pune Solapur road is lot more unruly than Pune Kolhapur road.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

Hi,
Planning Bombay to Chitradurga , etd is 5am from Thane. This means i should hit pune by 8 ish. Does it make sense to go through pune and take the Solapur route or continue on the Kolhapur route? I have a relatively low cg car. I understand that Karad can be a nightmare depending on the time of day. My first drive on this route after many years so appreciate all the inputs I get.
Thank you.

Cutting cross Pune city to access Pune Solapur route will be nothing less that pain on weekday or weekend. You will waste almost an hour in this. Better to go further from Pune to Shirwal and take the Pandharpur route to reach Zalki and touch the NH50 route.

Thank you, any idea on the road conditions between Shirwal and Zalki? 4 lane?

The road is combination of 2 lane/4 lane from Shirwal to Pandharpur and then on its 2 laned road all the way till Zalki. Post Mangalvedha there is an unmarked turn to Zalki, keep a sharp look out or else you will reach Vijayapura and into the city chaos. Better to touch NH50 at Zalki.

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

I am going from Hyderabad to Mumbai and Mumbai to Bengaluru a week later. I read in an earlier post that for route via Solapur, if we go via Pandharpur, it isn't good from Pandharpur till Zalki.

So, when going from Mumbai to Bengaluru, any idea if from Pandharpur we connect back to Pune-Solapur highway at Mohol and from there get on NH52 to reach Vijayapura, is it good?

For 1st leg of my journey, I anyways have no choice but to go via Solapur. But for this too, I was thinking of taking Solapur-Mohol-Pandharpur-Phaltan-Shirwal route, mainly to avoid crossing Pune East-west in afternoon time. Please suggest if this parallel route to Solapur-Pune highway is better?

Re: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai : Route updates & Eateries

If one is starting early from Pune (4.00 - 4.30AM) its better to stick to Kolhapur route while driving to Bangalore.
Most diversions are covered when the traffic is sparse. Also this route has lot of food and fuel options.

From Bangalore side its ok to take the Solapur route since there are a lot of breakfast options till Chitra Durga. Also entering Pune by 9PM or so will reduce the pain of city traffic.
