Other thing that I heard on the news is that authorities are diverting trucks wanting to go to Hosur to NH207 at Dobbaspet.

Some news on Bangalore-Neelmangala stretch. The 4.5 Kms near Peenya flyover is expected to be opened in about a month's time. There are another 6 mini flyovers on the same stretch. As per the news item in Bangalore Mirror-10th July the 20km drive is expected to take 15 minutes.

That is really good news. Hope they dont put a toll like NICE and could be a good alternative to people going to NH4 from north/central parts of Bangalore. Atleast after this road opens NICE should realize their exorbitant tolls.

The Belagaum dispute is back in focus with Maharashtra suspending bus services to Karnataka since yesterday.

With the Supreme Court allowing the Maharastra Government to file a fresh plea on including Belgaum in Maharashtra, the drive by road is now unsafe. Caution to be exercised with stone-pelting and damage to our vehicles could occur.

The news item in Times of India state that Shiv Sena has also announced that it will not allow buses from Karnataka into Kolhapur whereas MNS workers are believed to have stoned some KSRTC buses on Monday night.

While it is reported to be peaceful in Belgaum the risk of retalition by such miscreants exists.

If i remember correctly it is supposed to be 20 rupees for the 20 km stretch as per the news report. Though the exact amount will be revealed only prior to the opening. The entire stretch is access controlled & no bikes,3 wheelers will be allowed.

How bad is the situation? Are they targeting private cars? I am driving back to Bangalore from Pune on Sunday and want to be sure that it is safe. The news said the target was only MSRTC buses.

Any news by any one would help.

This is a dampener. I still don't understand why there's disputes on a place. Where will belgaum belong? Where will mangalore go? What about international borders India has? Tawang, Kashmir. Who ever mooted the idea of linguisting separation of states. We were well off as 4 presidencies and a few independant kingdoms. Why don't people break all these barriers? It's all vested interests of politicians who eye the hen that lays golden eggs. Which state's coffers will these affluent and developed areas fill. Damn.

Members from Belgaon, Belgaum, Belagadhi, Belagawi (what ever), how safe is it to drive through your place?

Avoid drive, if possible. Unruly mobs don't distinguish between buses and cars. Better idea would be to drive through this section at night.

Anainar. Since you are in Pune, how about making it to the megameet in Lonavala on Saturday?

Perfect! Good suggestion. Mob events mostly happen in broad daylight to capture attention of media and others. Evenings and nights should be preferred.

Leavong Bangalore at 4pm would just about make sense since you'd pass Belgaum around 12-30am & Kolhapur by 1-30am to reach Pune by 4/4-30am.
In the recent past I've done this with my dad for one major reason : Passing Kolhapur till Pune (last leg) in complete peace devoid of any 2 wheelers, Tempos, 6 seaters and also for the fact that the wait at all the 4 booths in MH is minimal as opposed to day time.
Don't start at night from Blr since the early morning sunshine really puts a toll on your eyes and irritates.
A word of advice: Drive through the night only if you've done late night/full night drives comfortably since I'm assuming you to be a single driver and the distance is beyond 800kms.

:-)Sorry, My bad MS. In which case he can start from Pune around 9pm. Starting earlier to this would guarantee getting stuck at Nelamangala check post since trucks create massive jams between 2am and 5am and they typically clear once a normal day begins after that. To avoid this beeline of traffic most of the commoners like buses deviate into Nelamangala town to rejoin NH4 (again in that jam but much beyond the point of getting stuck on the usual route), thus saving a good 20/30 mins easily.Anybody will be frustrated seeing such jams after driving for so long in bliss and hardly a few more kms before reaching the final destination.

Thanks for the invite. Just now I saw the thread. Am in Pune this weekend, but am not sure what plans my wife/son has on Saturday.

@parag - night driving is not my cup of team. I don't prefer driving beyond 1:00 AM. I have a KA registered vehicle. So, I don't see any problem in Belgaum but in Kohlapur - Belgaum stretch in Maharastra side is what I am worried about, now with Shiv sena joining the bandwagon as well. I will follow the news and make a choice. Worst case, I may have to drive on Saturday night.

So you may want to start early from Pune (say 4/4-30am) and you would be out of MH by 6-30/7-00am and in an hour's time you would pass out of Belgaum too and there on wont face any issues since you have a KA registered car.
However you plan, keep a tab on the latest developments and have a safe journey back
