Not sure about the Panjim-ponda section, we took a road just north of Madgaon. & finally bypassed Ponda too before hitting NH4A. The roads in Goa were generally very good, so I would expect the Panjim - ponda section to be good too.

After Ponda the NH4A was good, the only problem we faced was with the traffic jams - thanks to the mining trucks this was around 12 noon to 1pm or thereabouts. Most of the trucks were coming to Goa at that time. Not sure how bad the traffic is at other times. Hope that helps.

Re: Goa Route Queries

Friends,

I'm driving down to Goa from Hyderabad on monday morning for some work and leisure. I shall start early morning from home and try to get to bijapur by lunch, visit gol gumbaz and look to drive till sunset and get some accomodation. Next morning i would like to complete the rest of the drive and reach goa by 10-11am.

Now i need to know-

Where should i halt on day 1?
What route is best currently after bijapur?
Pointers about accomodation in goa, i want budget accomodation and preferably beach side.

Thanks.

@crisscross: Thanks for posting that, a friend will be visiting here and was interested to return to Mumbai via Ponda-Belgaum, on the 7th or 8th. I had dissuaded him because of the many 'bad road' reports in this and other threads. Now I can give him this latest update.

@unoczar, it's peak touring season, with both Indian and foreign tourists flocking to Goa. Anything beach-side is going at a premium. Wish you luck though!

And a Happy New Year 2011 to all!

Re: Goa Route Queries

An update on Phonda ghat road. This road from Kolhapur to Phonda is in good condition, minor patches of pot holes which is fine. The real problem is the NH17 after phonda ghat. I travelled till Kudal on this highway and the road condition is pathetic, not expected on such a high traffic route!

Re: Goa Route Queries

Hi
Just did Pune-Kolhapur-Sankeshwar-Amboli-Goa. Road upto Sankeshwar is very good (lot of traffic though)Sankeshwar to Amboli is decent with some bad patches . Amboli Goa too is not too bad but some patches are real bad (near Mah/Goa border). On return went to Kudal - Tarale-Gaganbavda-Kolhapur-Pune on NH 17. The road from Kudal till Gaganbavda is pretty potholed with some really bad patches. The ghat section is good and Kolhapur has no roads at all. Kolhapur to Pune is good again.

Re: Goa Route Queries

@unoczar,
sorry didnt see your post earlier, i would have suggested a beachside shack as the cheapest option.

btw how was your trip, which route did you take? how were the roads.

There you go, as you were thinking, we did end up beachside. All By Chance!

I will be making a Goa trip 4 feb-7 Feb and I'd decided on this route as well. Destination is South Goa.
Any updates on this route, specific sections to watch out for?

Re: Goa Route Queries

Make sure you start early, else you would get caught in sugarcane truck traffic between Pune and belgaum

Re: Goa Route Queries

My cousin took the route suggested by Canpush during christmas while driving from Bangalore to Goa in his Laura. He said the road was OK. Cover the distance between Pune - Belgaum quickly as you will encounter two wheeler traffic on this strech as day progress. The stretch after you cross ghats till Belgaum is posiibly one of the the best sterctch of road in the country.

Re: Goa Route Queries

An update on the 'short cut' route between Anmod and Khanapur is posted in the Mumbai-Pune-Kolhapur-Goa thread.

Re: Goa Route Queries

Plan to travel this weekend to Goa. Will be the first trip for 320d so want to choose route with better roads.
The Route I plan is NH4- NH17. Mumbai - Pune- Kolhapur - Radhanagari - Phondaghat - Back to NH17 road.

Any update on this route, road conditions ?

Road till phonda is good, the ghat section is good as well. The problem is on NH 17, its not good to drive. You should avoid NH17 as far as possible. Try Kolhapur - Belgaum - Goa. If you want to visit some place in North Goa, you can try Kolhapur - Nipani - Gadhinglaj - Ajra - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Goa
