We've traditionally taken the scenic Mumbai - Mahad - Goa route, but someone has suggested the Pune road to Goa. Is that better?

See you guys there!

Great, so finally a big gang in goa...If you guys are travelling from Bombay than stick to the bombay, goa route, unless you guys are planning to meet up with others in pune. The road up till nippani is great but than till amboli it's not that good, amboli too is a little bad. than once in sawantwadi the roads are good.
I will give an update later this week on the belgaum goa route.

please post general plans.

Munish.
i had been on part of this route last month during my amboli trip.
you do not turn at nipani. you go kolhapur-kagal-nipani-sankeshwar.
turn right at sankeshwar, not nipani.
sankeshwar-gadhinglaj-ajra is very good road.
ajra - amboli is 30 km with little patches, no potholes.

Guys, i will be driving down on Aug 13, will be there on Aug 14 and will head back on Aug 17 ( sunday). It would be nice if we all can catch up for a couple of hours on Saturday ( Aug 16) in North Goa.

I will start a Goa Meet thread in the meet section. Look forward to meeting you all and especially GTO and ofcourse the great hospitable hosts from Goa like Rohan & Dinar.

Yup, thats what I hear too. The Kolhapur route is longer, yet faster due to wider roads. I am seeing some mixed comments, which one is better?

Look forward to meeting up with you guys!

I think you take NH4 until Sawantwadi and then go to Panjim. I will be taking this route when i am driving there on Aug 14th. When will you be in Goa?

Check the Meet section for a Goa meet on Aug 16th.

i have already mentioned road from pune to goa answering to your post above.
if you are advised to take kolhapur-kanakwali route, then take this route.

pune-satara-kolhapur-radhanagari-dajipur sanctuary-fonda ghat-fonda-kanakwali-follow nh17 till panjim.

on this route, kolhapur to kankwali, you will pass through dense forest of dajipur.
road condition is bad. from kolhapur to kankwali, you will find food problem. no decent hotel on this section.

better follow pune -kolhapur-sankeshwar-amboli-sawantwadi-goa route.

The road from Kolhapur via Gaganbavda touches NH17 at Kharepatan, from where Panaji is 140 kms away via Kanakavali, Savantwadi. I have not travelled on this road and do not know the distance from Kolhapur to Kharepatan.

The route via Radhanagari is lovely and joins NH17 before Kanakavali (via the Fonda Ghat)

mr hvkumar has described the gaganbavda road correctly.

you see, this area get heavy rainfall.
roads passing through amboli or radhanagari or gaganbavda may be in same condition. road passing thru amboli is major road connecting vengurla to belgaum, it is in better condition than other two district roads.

whichever route you choose, you should mind safety.
