The 4-laning effort between Udupi to Mulki has started. While the current road is good, they are removing all the trees on both sides and flattening the same for expanding the roads. As a result, there is no shoulder, they have placed cement bricks all along the side.

Yes, infact i feel they are doing the work pretty quickly, Kaupu had lots of huge tress and in matter of days they cleaned up this area and road was flattened too...yes certain stretches are dicey esp at nights! i would suggest that people avoid this stretch between 6 to 8pm!

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just got back to Bangalore today morning from Mangalore. I took the KSRTC Airavat.
The bus was delayed by an hour due to shortage of buses . To add to this there was a traffic Jam due to some accident in the Shiradi Ghat section. It took complete 11 hours from Mangalore to reach Majestic Bus stand including the 1 hour delay.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am going to travel Kundapur tomorrow. Should I take Hasan Sringeri-Hebri route or Shimoga-Thirthahalli route?

I traveled in Hasan-Sringeri route in Sep, so just want to try Shimoga route! Am I doing anything wrong? How will be traffic in this route (comparing to Hasan route of course)? Me leaving Bangalore @ 5:15 in morning!

Is Thirthahalli-Hosangdi route doable in Fiesta?

^^
Took Hasan -Sringeri route only. Decided against going via simoga. Route till Hasan by-pass (towards Belur near rialway bridge) is good. Next 4 km is horrible. Road after Chikmaglur , before Aldur is horrible. Its okay then onwards, though there are rough patches at some places. Agumbe ghats detrioted, but drivable. From Agumbe onwards road is good but narrower.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Yesterday I returned Bangalore via Thirthahalli-Shimoga-Tumkur. I took Hulikal ghats (as I stated earlier just for heck of it). It turnout to be a adventure! First of all road after Basrur to Thirthahalli is so sorry state that I better not talk about it. I could hardly travel at 30kmph. The craters are not huge, but they are so uneven that you will be thrown around with seat belt.

They also digged road on both sides for putting some pipes. Road itself is small, taking corner using side is out!

Took 3 hours to negotiate 85 km.

I strongly suggest against taking Hulikal ghats (unless you have no other go).

Road from Thirthahalli onwards is great. If one wants to some via Thirthahalli, take Agumbe route and take diversion to Thirthahalli, which would be better route than take this hellish route.

The road left sad feeling in my mind that even in my dreams yesterday I was struggling to drive in that ghats.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

On Dec 25th,I did the Bangalore - Kundapur trip in my swift D.
Took the Tumkur,Shimoga,Thirthahalli,Agumbe,Haladi strectch.
The stretch is decent but the roads from Thirthahalli and Agumbe are in bad shape.Just couldnt cross 30kmph
Patch work is going on at a brisk pace at many stretchs.
Roads in and around Tarikere have improved tremendously.

On my return journey,I tried the other route
Did the Kollur,Nagara,Hosanagara,Ayyanur,Shimoga,Tumkur Bangalore route
Not too many craters but a lot of uneven surface between Nagara to Ayyanur.I'd recommend this route so as to avoid the really bad stretch between Thirthalli and Agumbe

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just came back from the trip to Coastal area.
Mysore - Belur = Excellent road. Forgetting the lack of roads in Hassan town.

Belur - Gendehalli - Mudigere - Kottigehara - Hornadu = Good roads. Thanks to Sushrutha and addy for road directions via Gendehally.

Hornadu - Sringeri = Average road, Via Kudremukh.

Sringeri - Kollur = Good road.

Kollur - Udupi = Good road.

Udupi - Ujire = Good road.

Ujire - Charmadi - Kottigehara - Mudigere = Good road. Some sections of ghat have gone for a toss. Be carefull about reckless driving by NWKRTC drivers on the Charmadi ghat road.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I had a bad experience while driving on NH48 yesterday. Here is the story:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/street...driveable.html

While going to Mangalore on 24th December, I left at 4 AM and reached Mangalore at 11 AM. So, total 75 hours with one 15 minute and one 30 minute break. I took this route: Electronic City - NICE - Magadi - Kunigal - NH48.
The timing was right, I did not get any traffic anywhere, except some in the opposite direction around Kunigal at 5 AM, and inside Mangalore city.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am planning to drive by Swift to Mangalore somewhere around 20th Jan. But looking at the feedback from you guys, I am having second thoughts now! What do you all say, good to avoid Shiradi? What other alternatives I have?
