If Town canteen in CKM is open, go there first for best Masale Dose anywhere in this world. (Masala Dosa - corruptedly spelt - these days) . Miles ahead of CTR, VB or MTR in Bangalore

If you are planning to hit Aldur, suggest go via CKM as suggested by Samurai as the road is Good and i am doubtful about the road between Gendehalli and Aldur. The road between Mudigere and Aldur was sheer misery when we took it a month ago. Not sure how it is now.

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Had been to mangalore on friday night by bus to buy a conty, didnt notice the roads in the ghats as i had dozed off. Made a return journey on Saturday morning, roads were good till gundya, from then on till sakleshpur were horrible. I cursed myself and it was very difficult to maneuver and pass through such huge craters considering my conty`s GC is just 148mm.

Where exactly is this located, can you point it out with gps/google co-ordinates?

For people travelling to Mangalore, the Shiradi route is really irresistible, no matter how bad it gets. Fortunately, the Udupi bound people have more options.

Town canteen is located on the Rathnagiri road opposite to the Govt. Polytechnic. It is a very small place with limited seating, but the food is very good.

Rathnagiri road is the road you take to reach Mullaianagiri/Kemmangundi. Just go straight on the IG (bus stand) road until it narrows down. That is the Ratnagiri road. Town Canteen is at the end of this road.

It is open in the mornings at 7am.

Thanks, it is pretty much out of the way. BTW, I may be losing my extra parking slot in Bangalore, that means no more regular drives between Manipal-Bangalore, back to mass transportation for me.

That's too bad Sharath. Your regular updates were pretty useful for this forum.

On an unrelated note - what is the latest on NH17 b/w Mangalore and Udupi (in terms of road-surface, 4-laning, traffic congestion, etc)?

Mangalore - Udupi is much better than what it was before 6 months. Beware of private buses on this stretch, coz they own the roads. 4 lane work is happening in parts.

Thanks for the quick update. How about the Kundapura-Udupi stretch?

I agree. The shortest route to Aldur from Belur is as follows,
Belur-Gendehally-Buskal-Haandi-Gullanpete-Aldur.
Belur-Buskal is good , from thereon it's not in good condition. The road is very narrow. I woudn't take this route if I'm not familiar with the local surrounding area.
Would rather take Belur-CKM-Vastare-Aldur.

I agree the Masaley dosaey (Fauji this is for you) is good over here.

But the good thing is dishes are served to your car, so no worries abt seating at the town canteen.

The other place where I like the Masaley Dosaey in CKM, is the hotel just adjacent to Planter's court, it's a garden restaurent, dishes are served to the vehicles.

I liked this one earlier, but now, it has gone bad I guess OR I could have visited when the cook had one bad day .

Mudigere - Sakleshpur

Guys,

Has anyone done the Mudigere (hand-post) to Sakleshpur route via Hanbal? I have done this long back - a good option to get back on to NH48 after crossing over Charmadi instead of Shiradi. This is what I am talking about:
