We did the same circuit 2 weeks before and the road conditions were exactly similar.

But we took the usual Hassan-Belur-Mudigere route instead of the Saklespura Hanbal option as the Belur-Mudigere road is in excellent condition and Belur-Hassan sections needs no mention on how good it is.

On return we drove Kalasa - Kuduremukha - SK Border - Bajagoli - Naravi - Guruvayanakere - Belthangady - Ujire - Charmadi - Kottigehara - Mudigere - Belur - Hassan for Bangalore.

The only bad section that one can really call bad to was in patches between Kalasa-Kuduremukha-SK Border.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

We will be in Manipal/Udupi for 3 days in 2nd week of august for work. Is there any option to get car/bike on rental to roam around. Essentially will roam around pre and post office hours.

Folks from Udupi/Manipal, any suggestions on this including places to travel around Udupi (short drive)

At first, I thought such service may not be there. Then I got curious and checked around. You are in luck, there is somebody who offers self driven cars.

Thanks, will call them up and check with them. Any suggestions on nearby places to visit, considering return to Manipal hotel for night sleep. Places not far.

I'm planning to travel to Bekal Fort from Bangalore, this weekend.

Please let me know the best route to take and the condition of the roads. Is it still raining heavily along the route?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi Team,

My friends and I (4 in all) plan to drive to Mangalore from Bangalore.

Please provide updates on the road condition.

Based on the road conditions I have to decide if it is the fluidic verna or the fiesta.

thank you.

The one via, Moodubidre, Karkala and Kudremukh route should be better. But i would not know, the effect of recent rains on the roads.

Travelled to Mangalore on Saturday, 3rd August 2013 evening and returned back on Monday, 5th August 2013 late night. Bangalore to Hassan is almost a 4 lane and is a pleasure to drive. Hassan to Sakaleshpur is manageable, but the Shiradi ghat road is bad. Lots of potholes which are getting converted into craters due to heavy rain and trucks / buses. It increased by travel time in the ghat section by 30 minutes. After Gundya, the bad road condition prevails for a few kilometers and after that till Mangalore is good. The journey time was 8.5 hours with a half hour food break and not exceeding 90kmph.

Another of those many articles which keep talking about Shiradi. This came up in Hindu today.

Imagine crossing 35 km in two hours!
Well, that is overstating it. Unless the driver is too much of a novice, it never takes more than 1.5hours.

There are such roads that would take two hours. Example, Husur-Tittimati road, where 10kmph is the top speed you can achieve.

Ouch! Much wear & tear on the driver and much fuel being guzzled. Where the heck does out tax money go?
