We discussed this in the other thread. City route should be faster.
BIAL-Hebbal-Mekri Circle - IISc - Yashwantpur - Nelamangala - NH48. (By the way now you can drive till Mekri Circle with ease with almost zero stoppages).
Why someone need to come to Mekhri Circle if he wants to go to Nelmangala? He can turn right from Hebbal itself and straight it meets NH4. Once he comes to Mekri Circle it will be mess and it will take additional 1 hour plus.

No need to come to Mekhri Circle if coming from BIAL or KR Puram.

Thats because one can potentially get stuck at the construction site for the railway flyover on the ORR. Thats the only reason, to use Mekri-Circle/IISc.

Came on a day trip to mangalore.

There is nothing to mention about the road till Hasaan. Except for this stretch about 1.5 kms before Bellur Cross toll. Road repair work has been going on since more than a month and one lane is blocked. But it's the way these barriers have been placed is what gets me worried. And , I am surprised that I don't see any glass pieces or tire marks at this location. Gets tricky when driving early mornings in foggy conditions.

Road conditions from just before Sakleshpur till Gundya are average with the occasional potholes , but nothing that cars with low GC can't manage. Just that one has to be be careful when tailgating other vehicles.

Just after Perne , you have this very bad stretch on a blind curve on a dip which is just impossible to avoid if at higher speeds. I managed to avoid all the earlier bad stretches but just couldn't avoid this one. My DVR , cell phone were thrown from their stands and even my glove box just broke off !! Initially was expecting atkeast a damaged side wall if not a damaged rim. Luckily , I don't see any visible damage. Good thing I took the Charmadi Ghat today. Bangalore to Manipal took me 7 hours 50 minutes, including breakfast and lunch break. Rarely crossed 100kmph, got 11.2kmpl FE.

A brief video of the scenic parts. [watch in HD]

Took the Shiradi ghat down to Mangalore today. Stated from Nagarbhavi at 7am and reached Mangalore at 130pm with a breakfast stopover at Surabhi in Sakleshpur. As the recent threads mentioned, Shiradi can be managed with sedate driving and watching out for the bad sections carefully.
But it could be tough to handle of there are rains and during nights as well.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Given that I want to go via Charmadi towards Udupi, what is the best route from Belthangady to Udupi? Via Moodbidri or Bajegoli?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am sorry my friends, but am asking this question as a last option after going through the entire posts.

My friend and my family will be travelling to Udupi on 2 Oct and back on 5 Oct. Please tell me which is the "best" road to take from Mysore to Udupi. Kids will be there so good view and water fall/water body on the way would be welcome.

I think I have 4 options:

1. Mysore-->Madikeri-->Sampaje-->BC Road-->Mangalore--> (Sampaje --> BC Road is the suspect)
2. Mysore-->Hassan-->Sakleshpura-->Shiradi-->Mangalore--> (Shiradi condition?)
3. Mysore-->Hassan- Bellur-->modigere-->charmadi-->Beltangadi-->BC road-->
4. Mysore-->Hassan- Bellur- Belthangadi-->Karkala-->

Thanks my friends for your information.

I did #3 just now, but starting from Bangalore. Terrific road conditions all the way from hassan and very scenic too. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive.
Saw more than a couple of streams by the roadside too.

Use a modified Shiradi option. So Option 2 works best for you.
2. Mysore-->Hassan-->Sakleshpura-->Shiradi -> Uppinangady -> Guruvayunkere -> Bajagoli -> Karkala -> Udupi.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Friends - I am planning a run down to Managalore next week with family (from Bangalore) and would appreciate any tips you could give me on the road condition and the best route to take. This is my first trip to Mangalore so i am not familiar with routes/roads.

Which car are you driving. National highway is the best option since this is first trip
