I always prefer Kundapura -> Halady -> Hebri -> Someshwara -> Agumbe -> Thirthahalli -> Shimoga -> Arsikere -> Thumkur by pass -> Bangalore route. Route is good all the way!

I read somewhere that the Agumbe ghats are closed for repair as well. Isnt that true? Are the roads from Thirthahalli to Agumbe in good condition?

Google maps says the NH75 is the quickest and shortest

Isn't NH75 is via Shiradi. Isn't it closed from tomorrow? Agumbe route is not closed as of now. And they haven't announced when it will be closed.

Anyway I prefer Agumbe route to one via Mangalore, this routes avoids private buses.

The difference is around 15 km more and route via Shimoga has lower toll compared to one in Hassan. However I agree that each town will slow you down a little.

I drove back to Bangalore from Mangalore on the 27th via Charmadi. A lot of traffic, very difficult to overtake slow coaches because 10 - 12 vehicles were stacked behind each other and there was a fair bit of opposite traffic. Shudder to think what it will be like now. Kalasa certainly sounds more attractive. The drive via Kudremukh is awesome too.

Drove Bangalore - Chitradurga - Shimoga - Tirthahalli - Agumbe - Hebri on the 25th.

Tirthahalli to Agumbe road is in good condition, but is 1+1 lane, and you will not be able to overtake even a two-wheeler if there is opposing traffic. There are a couple of nasty places where immediately after a bend there is a diversion, no warning boards whatsoever. O had to panic brake.

Agumbe ghat road surface is really crappy. Fortunately Tirthahalli to Hebri via Agumbe is all downhill in the Agumbe stretch, my side of the road was somewhat better than the other side, and it is a very short ride.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just made Bangalore-Mangalore-Bangalore via Charmadi.

Onward trip, at around 19:00h there was traffic pile up on the ghat.
There wasn't any accident but a truck and a bus were trying to pass on this narrowest stretch of charmadi.

More than a kilometer long on and off standstill traffic was observed, even though the vehicle population wasn't so dense.
I suggest to avoid crossing this stretch during peak hours.
I am sure situation will worsen when Shiradi and Agumbe routes are closed.

Any latest update? Heard there was a 19km pile up today. Is that true? Anyone caught in the same.

In any case, safe to pack extra food and water henceforth!

Isn't Shiradi closed since today? When did you travel via Charmadi?

Samurai san,

I was told, it's in the Charmadi. Might be an exaggeration. In any case, i wouldn't be surprised.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

It is very believable when it comes to Charmadi. I am concerned about Kalasa too since it joins the same road at Kottigehara. The road from Kottigehara to Belur is quite narrow, and can cause backups.

I am thinking Agumbe again. The road is pretty rough, but not much chance of pileup.

There was a 30 km pile up. A Kannada newspaper clipping seems to indicate such woes are guaranteed until Shiradi opens up.

I drove via charmadi to mangalore on 24th dec. Shiradi was open then.
And back to bangalore on 29th. Charmadi was still good then.

Now situation might be worse. I wont be surprised if there is heavy traffic now. its expected.

Is the entire length of the ghat 30 kms? Google maps says otherwise.
Looks like the thing is being exaggerated by the newspaper.

The 30KM pile up, they say is between kottigehara n kakkinje. But the google map says the distance to be of 27KMs, between them. They have mentioned 10KM of pile up in the ghats.

Kakkinje and Kottigehara is the "entire" Charmadi. Boy-oh-Boy.

Our driving school never teach how to drive on single carriageway roads and who gets preference at Hair Pin bends on ghats. This would get worse!!
