This is a challenge everywhere i guess(in & around DK) winding roads and in most places the local bus would rush and it is very scary at times...

last month had to get out of the road and could hear a thud if it was on my OHC am sure i would have got in trouble

Star, Welcome and i would like to add that last month whn i was there somedays i used have bath 4-5times, i mean in a day. so you can imagine the condition.

Private bus drivers in DK & Udupi are one scary lot. They are practically driving oversized F1 cars. I once did the mistake of taking on one of them in my swift and he almost shoved me into a big ditch. I was overtaking at that time and he refused to give way. They never get down the road. So, stay clear of these guys (especially on single lane roads)

Couple of weeks back, I had been to Karkala and it was not very hot, not cool either. It was somewhat manageable. That was probably because it had rained a little.

Some Pics of the Roads to Mangalore from Bangalore.
Lets see if the experienced guys can guess the route.
Did this 2 months back.
The last two scenes took away the driving stress.

I haven't travelled to Mangalore through Madikeri, but the 1st picture itself is the giveaway. And the other pics are definitely not of Shiradi or Charmadi. So, I can safely assume that you have travelled through the Mysore - Madikeri route

BTW is the Charmadi ghat road open???

I am planning to go Bangalore -> Mangalore next week, going through the thread I guess Mysore -> Madikeri is a better option. Can some one help me with deatils of exact route, distance and travel time. Does it make sense to stay in Madikeri for a day? if yes are there any good home stays on the way?

Excerpt from my earlier posts:

Route chosen: Bengaluru - Channapatna - Mysore - Kusalnagar - Madikeri - Suliya - Puttur - Mani - Bantwal - BC Road - Ullal - Summer Sands Beach Resort.
Roads are 90% fine. Kusalnagar to Madikeri is a bit rough but managable by any stretch and by any vehicle. BC road is under construction here and there.
The roads are full of curves and fun to drive.
I managed the distance (410 kms as shown by the dial) in 9 hours with stopping for breakfast and prayers while going to Ullal.
And on the way back I started at 9 AM and reached Bengaluru by 5 PM (8 Hours - No breaks 430 KMs via NICE). Fuel consumed..Ahhh..who cares!!
But it took me one tank full, one way.
From Mani I took the straight route towards Hassan by mistake,
but boy, what a road. I did a 'U' back to Mani and took the suggested right to Puttur.
The roads from Madikeri to Puttur are a driving enthusiasts dream come true. Full of curves, forests and scenery. I enjoyed the vacation + the travelling.

You mean to say as a place to crash for resting or sight seeing.
Yes there are good places in Madikeri for crashing and sight seeing.
(There is a seperate thread for this, search mate search!)
You can also visit a selected few places to visit in coorg, if you get time.
There is no need to take a break in madekeri unless the above reasons are true, if you leave early enough, you can make it by early afternoon to Mangalore. Caution it has started raining so, if you encounter slippery roads then that is going to slow you down.
What time do u propose to leave and what is your ride?

I am sorry, I had to rename this thread to reflect the reality. No other route has a 40+ page thead, this is the biggest and the most viewed thread in this section.

The process of traveling between Bangalore and Mangalore/Udupi has transcended mere route knowledge, it is officially an Art.

My wife and I are thinking of doing a ghat-to-ghat trip to cover all the ghats that head towards Mangalore/Udupi. Each weekend spend a day to cover a pair of ghats, go out of one ghat, and come back in another ghat.

Here is the list of adjacent ghats:

Sampaje
Shiradi

Charmadi
Kudremukh

Agumbe
Balebare

Better to do in monsoon to see the real beauty of the ghats. Best to be done in the Jeep so that we can feel the real monsoon weather.

Soon I'll start charting the routes. I know it is not too tough, but it will be a nice drive and will be a great tribute to this thread.

Anybody else want to join up? It will be great to do in a convoy.

PS:This will be hard to do from Bangalore in one day since all the ghats are at least 250kms away.

@Samurai. That sounds awesome I would have loved to as Udipi is my native town and I love the ghats. Am in B'lore and can't make it. Don't forget to put up the photos as well as a few detailed write-ups.
