If you are looking for only-veg places, my top choice is Chutney @Deepa Comforts (http://www.hoteldeepacomforts.com/restaurants_bar.html). Little upscale would be Sagar Ratna @Ocean Pearl (http://www.theoceanpearl.in/VegRestaurant.html). Additionally many places are spread around such as Janata Deluxe, Taj Mahal, Ayodhya, Srinivas (http://www.srinivashotel.com/).

If only-veg hotel is not a must, then there are many more options. E.g. Moti mahal, Guthu, Amazon@Empire Mall, Maya International (http://mayainternationalmangalore.com/restaurants.html), Aroma @Deepa Comforts.
For boiled-rice meal served on plantain leaf, head to Woodlands.

I drove to Chikkamagaluru last week and used my credit card for payment at all the 4 toll booths! Very convenient I must say. On checking about paytm, one of the booth attendants told me that it would be available soon.

The ghats is now worse than in the video, and you have to be careful for about a 10km stretch. But I believe its still the best way to go.

I drove this ghat again two days ago. I didn't notice too much difference though.

By "safe" do you mean walking or tossing a frisbee on the sand? And generally hanging around till sun rise?

I have not heard of a single challenging occurrence on Mlr. beaches.
The last one was way back in time by Parashuram.

Swimming: one word, NO.
The sea bed dips drastically (very) within 10 feet of the waters edge.

I knew a couple of guys at Surathkal engg. college who took an early ticket.

Ullal, which is technically just across the Kerala border (20-25 km from Mlr.) has a resort called summer sands. It is somewhat safe to swim, if you must. Mainly because they have official lifeguards. A friendly guy Loy Albuquerque used to run it. Probably still there.

You could hitch a ride on a motorboat to go to St. Mary's island some ten minutes out to sea.

Mangalore folks (at least the ones I know) all head to Goa when they want to see a beach. Palolem is the southern most Goan beach just across the Karwar naval base.

Gokarna is nice.

On the way out: After Sakleshpur, do visit Manjarabad fort. It is in the shape of an 8 pointed star (the only one in India) & was designed by a French architect. He built many forts in Europe and this one. I'm not able to recall his name right now.

As per latest news reports in Kannada papers, there is no official communication on ghat closure and it will remain open on January 3rd as usual.

By "safe," I meant "safe to play in the water." Thanks for the caution! :thumbs up. I doubt that we will be visiting the fort mentioned as children may not be too keen.:)

If you visit any beach in the evening time, you will immediately know whether it is safe to play in water. The beaches where the bottom falls out pretty fast will have very people in water. But beaches where the bottom falls off very gradually, you can see people walking in water even 50 meters away from the waterline even during low tide.

For example, this is a pic I took on Sunday when my kids were playing in water. You can see a surfer standing next to his surf board. In the second pic, the guy is standing and the girl is lying on the surf board. This is a very safe beach to play in water.

I drove from Bangalore to Mangalore on Wed via Shiradi Ghats, and it was not very bad. The road was really bad in patches with deep potholes, but the surface was bad (non-existent) for exactly 11km starting somewhere around the 265km mark from Bangalore (JP Nagar). However I was able to drive over it without too much problems, albeit very slowly. The rest of the road along the ghat is really really good.

The overall journey took me 9hrs including a 1.25hr break. I was driving slowly as I had my family. All-in-all, was a pleasant ride.

So if you have a good car with decent ground clearance, I would say go for Shiradi.
