Took the Airavat bus to Mangalore today. Started at 6:15 AM from Majestic and reached Mangalore bus stand at 5:00 PM.

Route taken was Bangalore-Hassan-Belur-Mudigere-Kottigehara-Kalasa-Kudremukha-Bajagoli-Nitte-Padubidri-Mangalore.

Roads were good throughout considering i was sitting in the last but one row. The only time i felt bad roads was after we entered the Padubidri-Mangalore highway.

Roads are narrow with heavy fog in the kudremukha region. Our Bus had to reverse a few times in some of the curves and also a couple of times when there was another Volvo coming from opposite direction. This journey was tiring but the scenery made up for it. There was moderate to heavy rain in some sections.

I think referring few posts in last couple of pages should help you summarize.

Quoting myself here. I drove down to Bangalore on Friday, 17th August. Manipal - Agumbe - Sringeri - Chikmagalur - Belur - Hassan - Bangalore.

Maybe because of my timing or because of Vajpayee, but I hardly encountered any human traffic. Vehicular traffic is anyway very less till the Chikmagalur-Mudigere diversion.

I would say it's the best route at present. Even for people travelling from Mangalore.

Today (Aug 19) , I started for Bangalore from Mangalore at 8 am. Decided to take Karkala->kudremukha ->Kalasa-> Kottigehara->Belur->Hassan->Bangalore. When we reached the Forest department checkpost just after Bajagoli, the forest personnel told us that Kudremukh-Kalasa sector is closed due to landslides and asked us to take the detour via Sringeri.

We took the detour and also took an one hour break at the Sringeri temple. From Sringeri , took the route to kottigehara via Jayapura.

Though slightly longer than the kudremukha kalasa route , roads were excellent throughout with very minimal traffic. This route is definitely a viable option if the other routes are blocked.

And I just came back to Manipal by Durgamba bus. The route taken was Hassan - Belur - Mudigere (some inside route) - Charmadi - BC Road - Mangalore. No issues other than some bad roads.

Even the Kuduremukha route reported landslides and hence traffic was blocked here for a while too on the weekend as per this report.

It also mentions that after clearing the soil, light vehicles were allowed while Premier KSRTC buses remained stranded.

At least for those traveling this week, better to avoid it altogether or take a call based on inputs from locals around here.

And here is some news on the Madikeri Sampaje stretch too that authorities say will take at least 2 months to restore due to the extent of damage the landslides have caused.

I am hearing trucks are now resorting to Agumbe route !!

Agumbe was my last hope to travel tomorrow, and unless the rains have totally stopped it may not be worth traveling !!

Some more updates on Shiradi. Localites claim road is motorable for light vehicles and are pressuring to open the roads immediately for light vehicles. Another news claims roads have been closed indefinitely.

Are you sure about this?

For one thing, Agumbe has a check post that will not allow unplyable vehicles through. So even if trucks are using Agumbe as you heard, they might only be small ones, because it's impossible for longer vehicles to take those hairpins.

FYI, rains have almost stopped. Hardly get a couple of showers a day here in Manipal.

Not sure, that is why wanted to confirm it. Official route for trucks is hulikal ghat. Hope its only small trucks, else it will damage the roads there.

Drove down to Udupi on 18th August from Bangalore via Chitradurga-Shimogga- Thirtahalli - Agumbe - manipal- Udupi. Almost 10kms between Chitradurga to Shimogga is not in good shape.

While coming back to Bangalore on 20th August, drove via Udupi- Manipal- Agumbe- Thirtahalli-Shimogga- Arasikere-Chennarayapatna- Nelmangala- Bangalore. Roads are in good shape except few potholes between Shimogga to Arasikere.

Arasikere-Chennarayapatna - Newly tarred road.

I used to take Lakkavalli route earlier but I felt Arasikere route is little fast compare to other options mentioned above.

Agumbe is tricky, particularly when there are big vehicles. last Feb due to some tourist buses from Bangalore there was traffic Jam.

I believe they are letting only small vehicles in Charmadi, this is good. however Charmadi is a landslide prone route.

Avoid driving in evening and on weekends.

This April, Charmadi was jam packed till foothills, had to snail through entire stretch.
