Hi all, does anyone know what the road condition in Shiradi Ghat is? Need to know because I'm gonna be driving to Mangalore sometime next month so I need to know if I have to take a high GC car or not.

Please search the forum with appropriate keywords to find the latest updates on the route that you need. This thread is quite active where travelers post their experiences like this one from first week of September:

After going through all the recent threads, I have arrived at 2 options.

A. As quoted above.

B. Bangalore - Hassan - Chickamanguluru - Aldur - Agumbe - Koteshwara - Udubi.

I plan to start at 12 midnight this Friday, to reach early morning.
Which of the two will be preferable? From road condition perspective. Or, if there is a 3rd better option, please do suggest.

We had done the same trip last Dec, and enjoyed the Shiradi Ghat road.

Car: Kwid
Travellers: My wife and myself.

Request for a reply by Friday morning, to finalize the route.

Many, many thanks.

Dear Exhaust Note, Please start a bit late . BLR to Hassan is smooth roads so you can do this before daylight, afterwards you can proceed through Shiradi ghat and reach Udupi. The drive is not enjoyable through the rest of the road at night, it's alright during the day. Carry a proper spare tire just in case and remember there aren't many rest stops for family once you cross Bellur cross coffee day and the A2B afterwards.

During my recent travel back to Bangalore tried a new route.
Puttur-Subrahmanya-Bisile-Shanivarsanthe-Arakalgud-CR Patna-Bangalore. The roads for most part is in pretty good shape barring few patches. Took me about 7 hours including 30 mins break. Even on Sunday evening, traffic was sparse until CR Patna. Bisile ghat has about 3-4KM stretch which is not tarred but a hatchback can easily do this. There are some intermittent bad patches from Bisile till CR Patna but manageable. There are no food options until 4 lane highway. The ghat road as I know is not safe between 6PM-6AM.

I think you meant -

Bangalore - Hassan - Chickamanguluru - Aldur - Agumbe - Hebri - Udupi

Please note that Koteshwara is on the coast near kundapur.

Any specific reason you want to reach early morning ? After Hassan, this route will not have many facilities till you reach Udupi. Also the roads will be very twisty after say CKM

How about leaving early morning around 4ish and still making it to Udupi by 11ish. ?

Thanks Kosfactor and Rajshenoy.
The reason to start early is to make itnarpund morning and have part of the day sightseeing.

I have been through the ghats at night and yes, it is not enjoyable from the sights perspective, but almost zero traffic makes me attracted to the proposition of night drives.

Which of the roads are better in general? Or, rather, considering the night drive, which road would touch suggest as more optimal?

In Dec I reached Udupi arnd 7:30 AM, this time, considering the rain damaged, am targetting 9 or 10 AM.

Your suggestions are sound and prudent, but, still heart calls for the night run.

Cheers,
Saurab C

Default The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just reached MLR from BLR. Took the regular Shiradi route and took 7:30 hours with a breakfast stop at Mayura for almost an hour.

Was driving my BIL's Baleno. The roads are still motorable in this route. You have to be careful about the sections with stones scattered all around. A police jeep that was escorting a Lodgy that met with an accident, triggered a stone from its tyres that came flying and hit the rear door causing a few scratches. The stone missed the window by a few inches. I noticed quite a lot of cars just flying through this rough sections and i found that to be extremely dangerous.

The pot holes have turned into an entire section with no tar and only stones scattered. Exercise extreme caution if you decide to take this route between MLR - BLR.

The above route took around 9 hours to Kaup starting at 1 am. Took 2 fuel stops and one rest/coffee break. The roads were very good all the way, except a few KMs of not so good patches. But on that too, you could maintain decent speeds.

The ghats started post sunrise and it was a very good experience to navigate the twisties. No fog to hamper visibility.

You took a 35kms longer route with risk of fog at night. You were lucky not to encounter fog. I am curious why you took this route.

As per the last couple of pages, this looked to be the best. Shiradi was faster but broken roads post the ghat all the way to Mangalore put me off.

Overall 35 kms is short, but this route indeed feels much longer.
