Some glimpses of Hassan to BC road.

Start of road after the end of toll road. Status is same as earlier.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I did Udupi and back on Sunday/ Monday.
Onward journey was in a WagonR and return in a Baleno sedan. Started from Girinagar at 0515 and reached Udupi at 1315 with numerous stops as a Golden retriever was traveling with us.

We took the Shiradi just to see how the road conditions were. The road till Hassan was bliss with FasTag showing great improvement at tolls. Post Hassan, the roadworks are going on and most part is on concrete stretch with diversions coming up now and then. It will be a nightmare driving in dark as the bad stretch come up unexpectedly. The Sakleshpura town has not changed and is a stop-go. Post the town, the roads are quite bad but manageable.
The concrete stretch has held up quite good with the top asphalt layer in shambles in corners. This is quite irritating.
Post concrete stretch, the road work is happening in bits and pieces with the width of the carriageway being reduced at some places. It was dusty and slow moving from Gundya until BC road.
Post BC road, the roads are excellent till Udupi. Pictures are available in the earlier post.
Breakfast stop was at Anagha Grand in CR Patna. Food was average fare.

Lunch was in Bittu da Dhabha near Hejmady toll. Food was excellent although it's looks can be deceiving.

The return journey was through Charmadi and roads are excellent throughout now with the bad patches between Guruvayanakere and Karkala all patched up.

Has any patch work done on the section between sakleshpur and concrete section of 'shiradi ghat'?

I have a trip coming up in first week of april, so hoping against hope, to hear some good news about this section.

It was filled up with mud which has given away at most places, but manageable. This is still the fastest route one can get to Mangaluru.

Are you sure ? the charmadi route is a no-brainer choice. Consume more time, and ruin suspension, to save ~6% of distance ?

Let me get it straight. Last time when I traveled, a km from Ujire, I encountered a long queue of cars following a concrete mixer. By the time I reached Guruvayanakere turnoff, I was 4 cars behind. And this was more than half an hour for a 7km stretch. There is absolutely no overtaking opportunities on the Charmadi stretch too especially if you end up behind a STC bus.
With these observation, I still feel Shiradi is fastest way to Mangaluru.

This post is a timely update, with a drive coming up soon. Is Hunsekatte - Umblibail - Muttinakoppa also redone?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did BLR - MLR 3 days ago, via Shiradi. (SUV with 4 adults and too much luggage.) Sedans were struggling. SUVs managed the broken roads better.

Today we just got back to BLR. Did Charmady.

Conclusion: Shirady was a mistake. I'll be going back to MLR in the coming weeks. Charmady it is. Till something changes.

Some road work is going on in this stretch at a couple of places, but we didn't had any issue as there were no potholes or such. Otherwise, rest of the stretch had good road.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I did Bangalore-Udupi today via Shiradi. It started raining lightly as I crossed Sakleshpur. The ghats were totally wet, as in monsoon. It must have rained heavily earlier, the temperature was around 21C in the ghat. Only after I crossed Nellyady, the rain stopped.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi All

I am planning for a solo ride to Dharmasthala and kukke this weekend on my Royal Enfield, how is the road condition in charmadi ghat and bisle ghat?

Any suggestions on how to deal just in case if I end up with a flat tire

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Dear Patrons,

There are conflicting news about the toll at Surathkal, can anyone confirm that this toll booth exists/doesn't exist?

It was there a couple of weeks back.

Thanks and warm regards
John
