Both can be used, not sure of the road conditions on the ring road, but the bypass is in good condition.

Frequent speed breakers and junctions can get irritating on the ring road, else its fine.

Take Hassan Bypass, fully divided and saves lot of time and straight away joins NH. However expect good number of humps something like 6 to 8.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hey Bhpians,
I need to travel to Bantwala on 2nd of July. Which route would you suggest?
I have driven several times on Hassan highway and craving for a change
A) Charmadi Ghat
B) Bisle Ghat.
To reach these, I need to take Hassan highway.
Or
C)Do I take Sampaje ghat route via Madikeri, Sampaje and Sulia to Bantwala?
Kindly help Zero in on a route that's enjoyable!
Thanks in advance.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

On a recent trip from Manipal to Bangalore, I thought it would be interesting to see the elevation profile of the Charmadi ghat. Since Bangalore is almost a KM high and Manipal is practically sea level, I wanted to check if there is any appreciable climb on the Bangalore end, or alternatively, if we reach a point that's higher than Bangalore enroute. It looks like we don't do that - the highest on this stretch of the ghats is still no higher than Bangalore. So, technically, I guess we descend or ascend the ghat rather than cross it :-)

Track starts from a little before Charmadi and ends at Mudigere. I imagine the Agumbe route will prove more interesting!

Not the usual kind of post on this thread, but thought some people mind find it interesting.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Just did Bangalore - Bekal - Mangalore - Hassan - Bangalore, from 1st July to 4th July.

Banaglore bekal through Kunigal - CR patna - Madikeri which was a delightful route! Drivers paradise with good surface and nice twisties.

Did the return through Shiradi like a complete fool! Left Mangalore at 4pm. The were horrible all the way till Sakleshpur town. Horrible as in nightmarish. There is a ton of construction on BC road till Uppinangadi, the ghats are fully broken except for short stretches of concrete roads. Post Sakleshpur (Usooroo retaurant) , the roads get better with one half already concretised. Lots of deviations on Hassan Bangalore, but that was ok since we left Hassan early Monday morning.
In the ghat section, there were times when one of my wheels were elevated. Even Ksrtc buses were crawling through sections!

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Travelled BLR- MLR through Charmady today. Roads are still holding up in this route.

There is a big set of new yellow rumblers before Kunigal with descending spacing between each strip. Created a small ruckus in the cabin with dashboard vibrations.

It was raining throughout, right from Bangalore all the way to Mangalore. I was in Charmady around 11 and it was covered with thick fog. It started raining heavily post Charmady and it continued till I reached Mangalore. There are occasional pot holes and rough surfaces after the ghat section and have to be careful.

Thanks for the update, before moving back to US we used to use this route pretty frequently and one very obvious thing we miss is driving to Mangalore via Charmady and enjoying the foggy drive with rains. Of course, the stuff that we bought from Ibbani cafe ( Gandhari Chillies) is still being utilized even today as with the other spices

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi All,

Posting a short video from my drive from Moodbidri to Bangalore on 4th July. The route was Shiradi and this video covers the bad stretch from end of the Concrete section of the Ghat until Sakleshpur town which is probably the worst stretch right now.

Hope it helps you decide which route to take on your Bangalore-Mangalore drives over the next few months.

Folks - Agumbe ghat is down, the alternative is Hulikal. I am hearing the news that Charmadi also has issues. Not sure how Kerekatte is holding. The Monsoon continues to pound with an average 10-20cm rain across the ghats from Belgaum to Madikeri. Plan your drives carefully.

I could pass through Charmadi ghat around 5:00 PM on 9th July and was holding good, but rains were indeed heavy!

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Do we have any further update on road conditions for Shiradi and Charmadi ?

Planning to travel to Udupi. My concern is if heavy vehicles are not allowed on Shiradi, it will result in pile up on charmadi.

If there is heavy traffic on Charmadi I want to take Agumbe else Charmadi is my preferred route.
