Thanks for the update and quick reply. Agumbe ghat end to Bhramhavar via Hebri is fairly good with some exceptions is what I heard.

This stretch seems to be perpetually broken.
Thanks to Dr.AD, he suggested going a little forward toward VV Dam, then take a right (at Hotel Nisarga) and follow the road. Here is the map

This stretch, also, seems to be always broken along with a couple of others on this route until we join the Highway.

Sri Ramadarshan is the place recommended and is at the following link

It is around 700m from the KSRTC bus stand on the left and can be easily missed.
Thanks for the fuel and food suggestions. I will definitely try Sri Ramadarshan this time around.

Generally, I fill up at Reliance near Gorgontepalya and, on the way back, fill up again at Reliance in Kundapur.

Doesn't look like a place with proper rest rooms. The main issue with this route is the lack of restaurants with proper rest rooms. At least that was the case few years ago, when Shiradi used to be closed for concrete work.

Are there any full equipped restaurants in this route now?

There is a new hotel(I did not visit) which looked decent from outside. Just googled and found the name-Aramane Vaibhava.

Aramane-Vaibhava is a decent place (there aren't many around there), decent food and washrooms.

https://g.page/aramane-vaibhava-tarikere?share

Its right on the main road just before reliance petrol bunk and turn off to Lakkavali road while going from Tarikere town, right after Lic office.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I did a round trip to Manipal last week. Took the NICE-Hassan-Belur-Charmadi-Karkala-Manipal. Stopped once for a coffee at Ibbani cafe and ended up eating some snacks there as well. Took the return too in the same route. Very good roads throughout and I was in my sedan.

That is the reason I said this is not for family. The food is great but it is a very small eatery.
Aramane Vaibhava on the outskirts of Tarikere and restaurants in Thirthahalli are the best bets for a family on this route.

Don't!!!!

This update is hot off the press... I drove down today via Hassan-Shirady-Mangalore to reach Udupi. I mean, I have a SUV that can easily handle any horrible road. However, I didn't enjoy how long the horribleness lasted.

1) Hassan-Sakleshpur is in horrible state, wherever concrete work is not complete.
2) Sakleshpur to beginning of concrete road is again in horrible state.
3) The non-stop construction between Gundya to BC road is just mind bending. Towns like Kallada are just nightmare.

The potholes are getting simply too big and too frequent for me to just fly over them.

Not very encouraging then. Especially with the kind of rains we have been receiving, I can imagine the kind of battered roads and potholes in that section. Looks like need to skip kukke and stick to charmadi.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Folks,

Just wanted an update on the route via Madikeri to Mangalore. I have been taking this route since the Shiradi ghat worsened. That was few months ago now. Really not comfortable with the Charmadi route, so asking.

We take the following route: Bangalore Mysore highway -> Srirangapatna -> Hunsur -> Kushalnagar -> Madikeri -> Sullia - > Puttur -> Kalldka...

This was a reasonably good road and wondering if it's still so with the rains.

Is Agumbe open? Time to take alternative route via Shimoga/Thirthahalli ?

Yeah, it is open I think. Even Charmadi is not a bad option on weekdays.

No need to to take the Thirthahalli option yet. That adds 40kms more.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Charmadi still holding up. A few potholes have appeared in the ghat region. As reported by someone who drove without trouble yesterday, in a car without too much ground clearence (160mm).

The scenery is said to be amazing. With waterfalls appearing everywhere.

Hi, not sure if i'm late but i travelled this road today and the road is in good shape just like it used to. No problems anywhere except for a few kms near kalladka where the construction is going on. My low slung city with full load had no problems with any of the patches. This route can definitely be considered.
