Yesterday I had planned to visit Southadka Ganesha temple and came till Hulikallu village to drive via Bisile ghat. My relatives atay in Hulikallu, was told about the bad road conditions around Gundya. So I dropped the plan and returned back. The patch work is almost completed between HN Pura and CR Patna, roads are good upto Arakalgud, barring the railway crossing inside HN Pura.

PS: Thanks to GV, I didn't really get affected by the road conditions. But sedans/hatches were suffering.
If we go from Belur to Mangalore, do we have to cross this Gundya stretch.
From GMaps it seems a different route but just wanted to check.

If you go via Belur, this bad stretch is not encountered. As of now the route via Charmadi ghat is the best option.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I recently traveled to Hassan. While I was glad to see that most of the flyovers and underpasses were open but at the same time was frustrated that all these are built to strictly accommodate just 4 lanes. There is no provision to accommodate an additional lane without having to rebuild them. Usually NHAI builds these structures with provisions to upgrade to 6 lanes in future but it’s a completely missed opportunity here

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hellos!

Just posting an update here.

The roads between Blr and Hassan are quite ok except maybe three or four deviations around the flyovers being constructed.

I took the Charmadi ghat and it was during the day. One suggestion to drivers is to keep the parking lights on (not hazard lights) and use the horn generously near the turns in the ghat section. There are too many small cars, usually Maruti 800s that are speeding around here. The traffic engineering in the ghats are really good, with rumble strips preceding every high risk zone.

Happy driving!

That is not how politicians and contractors look at it. They actually created opportunities for more work and bigger contracts in the future when 6 lane expansion comes.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I travelled last evening from Mlore to Blore via Ujire-Dharmastala-Gundya-sakleshpur. I think this is a very good alternative now till the stretch from BC road via Uppinangadi gets readied.

How is the section between Maranahalli <> Sakleshpur and Sakleshpur <> Hassan? Can a hatchback do this section safely?

The secton has been repaired now and is very good. No issues for even small cars. Also there are only about 4-5 broken sections in the Sakleshpur-Hassan stretch.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Folks, what is the best route to reach Dharmasthala from Bangalore these days ? Google maps is recommending Hassan-Belur-Kottigehara-Charmadi route.

Is Sakleshpur-Shiradi-Dharmasthala route good too ?

I'd be driving with two extremely motion sick family members. We prefer slightly less winding section of roads due to this.

Look forward to your inputs.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

@naut, Charmadi ghat is not suitable for motion sick people, so the route via Shiradi ghat is suited for you. I have shared the road condition on this thread,

Shirady is absolutely fine now for Dharmastala. After Gundya, you will have about 10 kms of broken roads under construction till the detour. The section from Sakleshpur towards Shirady has been relaid and is smooth.

It's still a work in progress. At some stretches concrete section have been opened for 2 way traffic, diversions remain..

It's still very bad. Try to avoid this for atleast 1 more year.
