I visited Mangalore for service-related work again on Friday, stayed at my relative's house in Hulikallu the previous night, and started from Hulikallu at 4:30 am. I reached the Renault service centre in Mangalore at 9:10 am. The route taken was Hulikallu-Kushalnagar-Madikeri-Sampaje-Sullia-Puttur-Mani-Kalladka-BC Road-Mangalore.
I returned to Bangalore yesterday itself and took the Ullal-Mudipu-Kolnadu-Vitla route to avoid the bad stretches of BC Road and Kalladka; this is a far better option for a peaceful drive from Mangalore. There was a lot of irritating traffic up to Kushalnagar, thanks to the slow-moving vehicles of travellers to Madikeri. It took me about 70 minutes to reach Vitla from Mangalore, and from there on it was a steady drive of 70-80 kmph till I reached Kushalnagar. I started from Mangalore at 1:15 pm and reached home at 9:20 pm with two breaks at Sullia and Hunsur.
Traveling to the coast this weekend with my Family.
We will be staying in Mangalore and Udupi
How are the road conditions post Sakleshpur towards Mangalore.
I have preferred Charmadi over Shirady, is this still the case now?

I drove the Charmadi last week after a very long time. Had a much better experience than the Shiradi. The only pain point was between Ujire and GV Kere.
I returned via Shiradi yesterday and the rains have again created big potholes from Marenahalli to Sakleshpura. However the concrete roads in this part have opened and the bad stretch is almost 40% of what existed earlier. I was able to reach home near ORR PES university in 9 hours with 2 breaks.

It is far better now when compared to last year, but the pain point is passing between Uppinangady and BC Road. I last drove on this route two weeks ago; after that, I opted for the Madikeri-Sullia-Puttur route for complete peace of mind.
I am planning a drive from Bangalore to Gokarna via Udupi. My planned start is 3:30 AM on Saturday morning. I wanted to know the following:
1. What is the best route to take and what is the road condition?
2. I plan to reach Udupi Shri Krishna temple around lunch time. Is there any permission or recommendation required to have lunch at the temple?
3. While I am intending to search the thread for good places to eat, are there any personal favorites that you would want to recommend?
My plan is to visit Murudeshwar, Om Beach, Marvanthe Beach, Malpe Beach and Gokarna (Not sure of what beach to visit here, need suggestions). My plan is to be back by Tuesday EOD. Are there any other places that I should include and visit?
I am travelling with 3 teenaged kids, 1 Senior Citizen and my wife in an XUV 700. Other than the regular, are there any other points that I should take care of pre and during my travel?
Has anyone taken Uppinangadi-Madanthayar-BC Road diversion to avoid the construction between Uppinangadi and BC Road on the main highway?
An acquaintance was mentioning that as a possible option so I thought I would check here.

I feel it's not worth the effort. Between Uppinangady and BC Road, only at Mani and Kalladka there are some diversions and road works. Just go easy here, and rest of the road is good.
Just returned back from a temple drive to Udupi, Idagunji, Kollur, Kateel, Dharmastala and Kukke Subramanya.
While going, I took the Charmadi route to reach Udupi. Roads are in good condition for most of the distance except for some construction between Ujire and Beltangady. This is still my preferred route, if the destination is Udupi.
Since I was returning from Kukke today, I took the Shriadi route. Shiradi Ghat is in good condition. Wider roads makes it easier to overtake slow moving heavy vehicles. About 7-8Kms before Sakleshpur bypass is under construction and will require careful driving, but if taken slow, it should not be a problem.
Sakleshpur to Bangalore is a breeze as usual.
Just drove down to Mangalore from North Bangalore through Shiradi. Left at 630am, reached Mangalore at 230pm.Inclusive of Two breaks amounting to a hour.
Road after Sakleshpur is bad in patches, Shiradi stretch is smooth except for Tanker / heavy vehicle traffic.
The biggest pain point is Uppinangady- took over an hour to cross the town due to high volume of traffic (controlled by cops near the river bridge)
The route is fine for low GC too as i drove down in a City 5G
Drove to Mangalore via Shiradi Ghat on May 1st. As many have noted, the roads after Sakleshpur are under construction, and the rains will likely cause further delay in work. From Uppinangady through Mani to Kalladka, the journey is challenging with auto's, 2 wheelers coming from all directions you will requires significant patience. Despite this, leaving at 5:15 am arrived at BC Road at 10:45 am still the quickest option. For the return journey on the 4th, started from Udupi at 2:30 pm via the Ujire-Dharmasthala-Shiradi route. The roads near Ujire are in better condition but still its work in progress. Ghats as usual had slow traffic due to tankers and laden trucks. Traffic was manageable until Kunigal, after which it steadily increased, coming to a near standstill after the Solur toll; presumably due to many people returning home, it took 30 minutes to reach Nelamangala toll. From there, the highway was again congested due to an accident ahead, causing another 20-minute delay, resulting in a 10:40 pm arrival at home in Uttarahalli. The numerous eateries in Hassan and before Solur significantly slow down traffic as people rush to enter and exit them.

It is due to the day and time. Sunday evenings are always bad, so I avoid returning to Bangalore on Sundays.
Regarding time, if you plan to reach nelamangala before 5pm, or at least 6pm, even on a weekday, it is pretty smooth. I visited Udupi 3 times in the last 5 weeks. If I reach nelamangala after 6:30pm, it takes forever to reach home.
Folks,
For our Kids's summer break, we are putting this plan together.
May 10th - Bangalore to Honnavar
May 13 - Honnavar to Udupi
May 17 - Udupi to Kukke
May 18th - Start early and reach Bangalore by 3 pm
Kukke is a stop over for us for the return leg. Idea to stop at Kukke is to basically reduce long drive from Udupi to Bangalore and avoid exhaustion.
Need some inputs on the condition of the roads from Bangalore to Honnavar and which route to take. Google is recommending
Bangalore -> Tumkur -> Chitradurga -> Ranebennur -> Hirekerur -> Honnavar
While returning from Udupi, we will be driving via Kukke. I am reading that the route from Udupi to Mangalore , lots of repair work is going on. This is the route we are planning to take
Udupi -> Karkala -> Belthangady -> Shishileshwara Temple --> Kukke
Please share your feedback on these routes.

You have a very tight schedule. Udupi is very beautiful place and lots of places to explore.
Sri Krishna Templ, Udupi
Very beautiful temple. Don't miss it.
You don't need special permission for lunch. Just be there on time.
Malpe Beach is a good idea, try and include Bengre as well. Bengre is a delta point and the drive to here is very beautiful.
For lunch, we generally visit Hotel Sarathi near the highway. Recommended for families, they're hygienic and serve traditional south Indian food.
Mitra Samaj hotel with in the Sri Krishna Temple complex is another popular place.
For coastal sea food, you can go to Thimmappa. Very popular place.
There's a lot to do here, but with your plan this is what I can recommend.
Happy vacationing. :)

Hey! I am done with the trip and stayed at Udupi Inn at Udupi. This was very close to the temple. We were there overnight before we went to Gokarna. However all our plans at Udupi were washed away thanks to the rain. We bought tickets to St Mary's Island and the boat never left. It was raining so heavily.
Covered Maravanthe on the way to Gokarna from Udupi. This was a good place to take pics. However, the beach is best seen from the drone which I did not have.
At Gokarna it was a fairly new beach resort (Aathithyam Beach Resort) and were recommended a boat ride to cover all the beaches which otherwise would not have been possible.
