Magundi is 25kms from kottigehara and then to Kalasa via balehole is another 24 kms. This road, though longer by 10 kms, is a much better road. Bangalore - Udupi via Ck'lur, Balehonnur, Magundi, and Kalasa is also 435 kms ! though looks longer ! | |

I would definitely advise taking Sakleshpur-Shiradi route. Advantage: 1. Shiradi ghat road is wide and less curvy. Only about 2 kms of bad stretch which I managed on my Spark with 4 ppl on-board without any underbody hits. But you have to drive carefully in 1st and 2nd gears on this bad stretch. 2. If you are to visit both Kukke and Dharmasthala, you can first go to Kukke by taking left deviation (22 kms) at Gundya, finish darshan, come back to Gundya, and then proceed towards Dharmasthala. You can halt at Dharmasthala which has better facilities. If you take Charmadi route, you have to visit dharmasthala first and then Kukke. (Check my trip log). Quote:

This is the route is am most familiar with, followed by the Charmadi route(Last time i took Charmadi route). Because i felt shiradi route is faster. Also, nowadays, buses reach karkala quite soon! For eg Vishal I leaves Bangalore at around 9 30pm and reaches Karkala at 5 30am!! | |

Last week i went to Dharmasthala, but fearing Shiradi road, i went thro' Mudigere-Kottigehara-Charmadi & returned via the same route. I wanted to explore going / coming back via Shiradi, but was vetoed down by my family members. I want to go to Kukke sometime in May end / June, so i think the road should be in good shape by then, as you mentioned repair work was in full swing. | |
