Hi,

Need help for going to Kundapura, without getting into Mangalore. I just did Bangalore - Mangalore - Bangalore last weekend. The road condition was good, I mean driveable throughout.

Need a faster route to reach Kundapura, I understand from the previous posts that Mangalore-Udupi road is under-construction should I go via Bantwal-Karkala-Manipal to hit NH17 ?

15 days back I tried taking this , but @ the beginning (while coming from Hassan side) of the by-pass(near brindavan hotel) there was no signs of the construction of an underpass bridge, one had to deviate on the gravel, muddy road.
Anyways will take this route today for my trip to native.

Following route is faster
Bangalore-Tumkur-Shimoga-Tirthahalli-Agumbe-Someshwra-Hebri-Halady-Kundapura.

Till Tirthahalli road is very good, between Tirthahalli and Someshawara road is drivable (40+), afterwards also road is very good.

I second raghu till Tirthahalli. The summer rains would have made the whole region green and beautiful. You dont have to go via Agumbe and take direct road from Tirthahalli to Kundapura via Yadur. The road condition is good and is very scenic. You will also save distance and time.

I came on NH 48 last weekend in a friend's Santro. We did not find any pot holes. Despite stopping for breakfast and driving at 80 - 90 kmph, driving slow in ghats as the car cannnot handle high speeds there, and stops at 3 places due to accidents, we took only 8 hours! And the car returned more than 20 kmpl. I wish i had brought my Palio.

Did you travel in this road (Via Hulikal ghats?) recently? I have been in via Hulikal Ghat in Jan 2nd, and it was a big mistake. Here i summarized my experience. Road is horrible from Basrur to Tirthahalli Junction! That is the reason I suggested via Agumbe! Of course it will add 10km, but it is worth it considering you can't drive more than 20kmph in Hulikal ghats road due to non existent road.

My parents took KSRTC via Hulikal in March, it was horrible then too. Unless member traveled recently can confirm that roads are repaired, I would strongly suggest not to take this road.

KartikK, can you update which route you took and journey conditions? I am going to Kundapur in May, it would be helpful if you can provide feedback.

KartikK, can you update which route you took and journey conditions? I am going to Kundapur in May, it would be helpful if you can provide feedback.

I checked with my friends in Tirthahalli and they said it is fine. Neverthless i go by your word as you have had first hand experince on driving on this and agree that route via Agumbe is better bet.

I am driving to Tirthahalli this weekend and get some first hand account from the guys there.

Was waiting for someone to update the location of the kunigal bypass. I am starting now, hope won't miss it..

Kunigal by-pass starts near the Johnson Tiles Factory, about 5-6 kms before Kunigal. Once you pass the factory on the right, the traffic shifts to the right lane and on to the old NH48 road to Kunigal. At this point the new road continues straight. The new road bypasses Kunigal town.

EDIT: By the time I have posted this, I'm sure most of you would have discovered it

It ends around 8 kms after Kunigal. There is a hotel where buses stop, to your right.
