re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Any idea on the present condition of roads between Chikmagalur to Koppa?

Planning to drive from Hassan to Koppa on this Friday in my Wagon-R, hence this query.

Can anyone confirm this news. Would be driving to Sringeri

Nopes it wasnt me I did this trip on a Sunday

Just back from yet another quick trip . Did a mistake of starting at around 6 pm from cousins house in BTM .Took 1 hour to do 5 kms till Bannerghata NICE Road entry . Reached Puttur at 1 am ! Encountered heavy traffic till Hassan ( 10 pm ) . We started off again at around 11 pm . The ghat was relatively with less traffic only to run into the Bangalore bound buses . Had a few close calls with these buses between Gundya and Uppinangady . One such Durgamba bus had just one auxillary lamp on it and I mistook it to be an approaching 2 wheeler!! Swerved at the last second to miss the bus which was overtaking another bus on an uphill stretch and a blind corner . It was so close that my side mirror was hit ! Finally reached this place 12 kms beyond Puttur at around 130 pm .

The return leg was equally sad with the whole world trying to enter Bangalore . It was only on the 4 lane stretch before Nelamangala that we were able to make up some time . Still it took us close to 7 hours to reach Koramangala.

I have now decided to go back to my earlier practice of planning my drives such that I reach afternoon . Which means I have to start from Mangalore around 7 or 8 am ,if i have to escape the torture on a Sunday .

Is the route madikeri->sulya-> kukke open now? Long time back i had read in paper that they have closed the madikeri->sulya section for road construction

As of last week, no tolls are being collected. Even the trials were stopped (at the first toll after Nelamangala), but I vaguely remember trials going on at the Bellur Cross toll booth.

I drove from Bangalore-Manipal this sunday. No, they didn't collect any tolls. I guess they are waiting for something. I hope they wait until 4 lane roads reach Hassan.

This trip was pretty slow compared to my usual. I left at 11AM, so I had to deal with Bangalore traffic. I had to deal with light rains in Shiradi, heavy rains after crossing Gundya, and very heavy rains around Beltangady.

The visibility was very low and I could see coconut fronds falling from the trees due to the heavy winds. At one place, a frond fell right in front of me and I drove over it half a second later.

Sullia: Heavy Rains, Strong Wind – Woman Dies of Lightning

The light rains in Shiradi caused the road to fume all along. It was like the roads were on fire, roads were smoking.

Later that night my mom called and wondered how I managed to drive through Beltangady, the TV reports apparently showed some crazy weather.

I drove from Udupi to Bangalore last Sunday(8th April). I crossed Shiradi Ghats around 3pm and I encountered hail storm couple of kilometers before Donigal. It was not a very bad one though & It lasted almost till I reached Sakleshpur town.

There was no toll either and they told me that toll collections will start on 20th of April but I am not sure if they are doing that! Earlier they had told that it would 1st of April!

re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi all

I'm planning for the following trip to cover Kukke, Dharmastala, Kateel, Udupi, Horanadu, sringeri & kollur for 3 days.

1 Hebbal > Kukke
2 Kukke > Dharmasthala
3 Dharmasthala > Kateel > Udupi
4 Udupi > Horanadu
5 Horanadu > Sringeri
6 Sringeri > Kollur
7 Kollur > Bangalore

i) Is this route plan be optimal? I'm still confused on the order of (Kukke, DSL, Horanadu)
ii) Hows the route condition from Kollur to Bangalore. I used to take Kollur > Nagara > Hosanagara > Shimoga > chitradurga > Bangalore.
Is there any other route suggestion?

Thanks a lot!

~ Chandra

Chandra,

This what i propose

Day 1 - Hebbal - Kukke - Dharmasthala - Kateel - Udupi (Night halt)

Day 2 - Udupi - Kollur - Tirthahalli - Sringeri (Night halt)

Day 3 - Sringeri - Horanadu - Chikkamagalur - Bangalore

Here is the Google link

Bangalore, Karnataka to Bangalore, Karnataka - Google Maps

a) The Kollur - Tirthahhalii road has some bad patches for few KMs. You can visit Nagara fort and Kavale Durga on the way if you have time.

b) You can visit Anegudde ganapati temple on the way from Udupi to Kollur

c) Visit Sirimane falls wich is close to Sringeri.

One possible problem with the above is that if you get delayed in Kukke, you'd get stuck in Dharmsthala till evening as the temple remains closed in the noon till 6:30PM or so. Pl. do check the closure timings directly from the temples.

Otherwise Fauji's plan is just perfect.
