Howz it otherwise now? I have to travel back to B'lore tomorrow.

As it is an early morning start, toying with the idea of venturing on shiradi.

Does it also mean that Agumbe will open before that. Because I don't think they can keep 2 ghats closed at the same time!!!

This post had reports that patchwork was in progress and the bad part had gone better:

The "bad" stretches is only about 20% of what it was during October this year and its quite manageable (will not scrape the bottom) if careful. Work to patch this up is going on. I had taken this route expecting the worst of conditions and was pleasantly surprised.

Agumbe and Shiradi can be closed at the same time as long as Charmadi and Sampaje remain open . You also have Kalasa - Kuduremukha - Karkala as well.

Agumbe in general is also not the most preferred route for those heading to Mangalore and they end up taking Charmadi or Sampaje once Shirad is closed.

However, closure of both these ghats remains news till it actually closes, as we have seen during many instances that the decision(s) keeps getting postponed.

I drove back to Bangalore via Shiradi this Monday, stretch between Gundya and till the concrete road starts is too bad but still manageable. Apart from this, roads are freshly tarred up in and around Gundya and till donigal from Sakaleshpur. Charmadi is any day better considering the present condition of Shiradi, however I still continue to take Shiradi as this is still remains the faster route to Puttur than going via Charmadi.

As per report published, Agumbe ghat is supposed to be closed for 1 month, so ideally it should open from January 1st week. But as with all works of NHAI or PWD, you never know they may not be able to complete the work on time.

Agumbe has been closed since the 1st. So if they finish work on schedule then it should open by 1st Jan.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Traveled Bangalore-Mangalore-Bangalore on Dec 9th and 10th.
Took Shiradi ghat both ways and i can say that this is the quickest route considering other options(Took 6.5 hrs in each direction including breaks). From Bangalore you can expect bad roads only after the concrete pavements in shiradi. Although roads are manageable, there are some rock and mud filled potholes which causes roads to look pathetic with dust all around you. Was in my Ecosport and was easily able to drive on bad patches as well.
Please be careful if you are in a low slung sedans on some curves.

The bad patches appear only for about 10-15 km after the concrete pavements towards Mangalore. You will have some bad roads before and after Gundya where you can easily pass at lower speed. Post this section you will be on smooth roads all the way till Mangalore.

Well, it was indeed pathetic in reality a month before. It has been patched as per reports here and hence it is not bad as of today.

The full length video of the whole bad stretch was uploaded few weeks before. Even buses were seen struggling and at night things were easier only because one could assess the oncoming traffic.

Thankfully, the patchwork is what you passed in your recent drive.

Yes. This patch work makes it the fastest option as of now.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did a Bangalore-karkala-udupi-Bangalore the last weekend.

For the onward journey took this route.

For the return journey took this route.

Roads are good except for some broken stretches.

The beginning stretch of Shiradi ghat roads, about 5kms is badly broken. After that the roads are awesome cement roads.

Have this stretch on video, this is from Dec 10th driving from Gundya towards Sakleshpur. The video is running at 2X speed to save time. Watch in HD to see the road surface clearly. Youtube really spoils the video upon upload.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

This is a question on the Tolls on this stretch. I havent really driven post the demonetization drive(tolls were relaxed till december) . Planning to drive this weekend via Shiradi and return via kudremukh-sringeri route.

So i want to know if they accept e-payment such as paytm or other wallets or i need to arrange for cash ? If any specific e-payment mode works, please let me know so that i can avoid surprises
