We were two bikes going from Bangalore to Udupi. We took Hassan, Belur, Charmadi, Belthangadi, Karkala, Udupi. It took 9 hours. The roads were great upto Uijre. Thereafter the traffic, heat and broken roads reduced our speed. Also a bit of 12 kms broken roads after Hassan to Belur. The road around Mudigere are freshly laid tarmac and super to ride on.

On our return we took the route as quoted above and it was fantastic especially for bikes, smooth surface, and lovely curves. Agumbe ghat was great and so were most of the other roads except for a patch of 10 kms or so before Chickmangalur and the other one before Hassan mentioned previously. We took 10.5 hours on the return mainly due to dense fog from Agumbe to Sringeri and frequent stops to admire the scenery.

Thanks for the update. Google suggests this road from Manipal to Bangalore. I presume it is the fastest. Planning to go in first week of Feb

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi All,

Did Bangalore to Mangalore on 10th Jan via Shiradi. Some amount of material for repair seems to be ready for work to start on 20th.

Road after concrete section continues to be in shambles.

There was a tanker accident after Gundya which forced me to take the Subramanya-Uppinangadi route. However, the road is in decent condition and therefore it was only an additional 20 mins drive for me.

Planning to take Charmadi on return.

I was planning to travel to Udupi on Jan 25th. But looks like there is Karnataka Bandh called for the same day http://www.thehindu.com/news/nationa...le22423950.ece

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Folks,

Drove back from Moodbidri to Bangalore today via Charmadi. Started around 8 AM and reached home by 3:30 PM. I was lucky to cross a tanker stuck at one of the hairpin bends which meant that there was a line of heavy vehicles which could not proceed. Not sure how bad the jam would have been, as mine was one of the first few vehicles to pass. I am worried about what to expect once Shiradi is closed.

Also a new layer of tar is being laid just before Hassan town, while driving from Belur. This stretch had quite a few potholes and badly needed a repair. Nothing else specific to report.

I took the Shiradi Ghats. Prior to the concrete stretch, the road is in a shambles for about 10 kms or so. I was lucky enough not to scrape the under body of the car. This is very much doable provided one exercises caution and this route is by far the fastest route compared to Charmadi Ghats
I felt the Charmadi Ghats was far too scenic compared to Shiradi Ghats.
Will update my travelogue with photos shortly...
SKATING CAMP IN MANGALORE : 28 Dec 2017 - 1 Jan 2018

Folks

Apologies for the delayed travelogue. Here they go. My first son had his skating camp in Mangalore in the last week of December 2017. We went as a family and booked accommodation in Kavitha Residency. Basically the hotel was very close to the skating rink and this was the primary reason as to why I chose this hotel.
The flip side I can think of is the lack of adequate parking within the hotel
premises

For the onward Journey went via Charmadi Ghats. Here are some of the snaps on the onward journey

FRANCIS DORIS SKATING RINK

The location of the rink is truly picturesque. Behind the rink is a river and behind the river is the Tannirbhavi beach. Once can even enjoy a ferry ride from the back of the skating rink to the beach.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi Fellow Team-BHPians,

Need few suggestions with regard to my upcoming trip to Udupi tomorrow. This is the first time i would be driving to Udupi and have chosen the below mentioned route for my onward and return journey suggested by google maps .

Bannerghatta-Nice road-Kunigal-Hassan-Belur-Charmadi-Bajegoli-Karkala-Udupi.

Need suggestions for places to stopover for breakfast in case i cross Hassan before 7:00 am since i am planning to leave home by 4:00 am hopefully.
Or , if you could suggest a place which is open early at hassan for breakfast .

Also, while going through google maps i found Dharmasthala temple to be only 13 mins away from Ujire , was wondering if i could visit the temple too and reach Udupi by lunch time.

Any suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys .

Regards,
Dhiren

The next bet for Breakfast will be Belur (30 Mins from Hassan), Mudigere (70 Mins from Hassan) & Banakal (90 Minutes from Hassan).

However, in my opinion, Hassan itself remains a better choice considering the options here. Belur offers very basic/mediocre hotels and I personally would recommend it only for Lunch (again Basic)rather than breakfast.

Hotel Raama at Thanneruhalla, Hassan is a good option as it is just before Belur Road starts at the other end of Hassan.

I hope that this place (Raama mentioned above) is open for early breakfast. Else you can try Suvarna Regency which is 5 minutes before Raama.

It will all depend on the time taken for Parking to Darshan. So can't really comment there.

With a 0400 Start, you will cross Hassan at 0630, Belur at 0700, around 0900 is when you should be at Ujire. If you intend to visit Dharmasthala, you can reach there by 0930, wrap up Darshan by 1030 and start your journey but from here to Udupi, it will be an easy 2 hours which means you can target for lunch at Udupi itself provided you don't get delayed anywhere, right from start.

Agree, finish off Darshan before 10:30 am else you will have to wait for at least 1.5 hours to have the darshan.

Thanks a lot. Raama looks like a good option in that case.

Just in case you are running perfectly well on time, have these options as alternate over having breakfast at Hassan:
  1. Sumkukha Regency, Belur
  2. Indian Coffee House, Belur - This is not marked but is right here.
  3. Fresh Bean Cafe, Banakal(Unsure about Breakfast here though but worth a stop for coffee)
  4. Multiple petty restaurants at this junction at Kottigehara

Any reviews on Ibbani Cafe in Mudigere? I passed by yesterday, the place looks nice, but saw only car in the parking lot.

That has been there since a while Samurai. This is almost in lines of Rock Garden after Mudigere towards Belur.

So only a proper try from one of us can say how good or bad it is .

There was another very good cafe shop almost near Mudigere Fire Station that served better coffee and lovely snacks which later deteriorated into a place where they started serving usual South Indian meals. Their rest rooms were also pretty clean as they used to hand over the keys to use it.
