Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hi Guys,
Can anyone suggest a route from Bangalore to Mangalore? I will be travelling this Wednesday and back on Thursday in my Octavia RS. Please suggest a route with a good ground clearance.
I am new to this side of the world.

On a weekday you can actually do Mysore - Madikeri - Sampaje - Sullya - BC Road - Mangalore.

This route is clean in terms of road conditions, has lesser incidents of blockade due to landslides when compared to Charmadi.

Charmadi option is not at all bad but then it has 11 Hair Pins and few of them have taken the beating from recent rains (as always the case). Plus, its narrower that the progress might only feel slower.

You can take Bangalore Nelamangala Kunigal Channarayapatna Gandsi Arasikere Kadur.

With CR Patna to Arasikere all done (as per reports here and elsewhere), thats the best option as on today for Kadur.

So basically drive all the way on the Bangalore Mangalore highway till the end of Channarayapatna bypass, turn right and drive another 80 odd kms to Kadur from here.

I am not sure about that but with the suggested option via Channarayapatna, assured good roads all the way. 4 Lane till CR Patna Bypass, followed by 2 lane bypass and then excellent 2 lane beyond that.

There is another option of doing via Yadiyur where you need to drive 120 kms on 2 lane and the time taken will nearly be same to CR Patna option.

Hiriyur-Ajjampur-Shimoga is good. But I'm not sure how the Ajjampur-Birur section is. Moreover, it is much longer as you're going further north to Hiriyur coming back south.

The route suggested by Parag is the best. In addition to good roads, the CRPatna-Arsikere section is very scenic and beautiful to drive.

Also remember reading on a FB forum that this section was recently relaid and has very good tarmac now. Apparently the speed breakers have had a reduction in height and hence much easier to drive.

Yes, I recollect someone posted a picture of the freshly laid tarmac on the CRP Arasikere stretch on this thread and hence recommended the same.

Otherwise this road was in a pathetic state few months before.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Any reports from Charmadi stretch from this week? I have a Udupi drive planned for tomorrow, starting from Bangalore at ~3PM.

An earlier post says the curves have taken some beating. Can a loaded swift (previous model) negotiate without scraping the bottom?

My preferred route of Hassan-CKM-Balehonnur-Agumbe is not an option this time due to kids susceptible to throwing up in the longish ghats. If Charmadi doesn't work out, will fall back to CRP-Arsikere-Tarikere-Lakkavalli-Tirthahalli-Agumbe route.

My wife took a bus this time to Udupi day before and reported no issues, except the bus was driven sedately on the ghat stretch. She left from Hanumanthnagar at 2130 and reached Udupi at 0615. The bus did the usual Bengaluru - Hassan - Belur - Kottigehara - Charmadi - Guruvankere - Naravi - Karkala - Manipal - Udupi route.

Please avoid Agumbe Ghat, due to landslide/collapse it is closed.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

News says light vehicles are allowed, unsure how true is this.

If Agumbe is also shut down, along with uncertainty on Charmadi + Shiradi closure, severely reduces the options one has to reach Udupi.

Remaining options:
  1. Kudremukha
  2. Sampaje
  3. Mastikatte-Hulikal
