Latest Update on Deccan Herald today:
https://www.deccanherald.com/state/s...ht-691147.html
Adding to this, Deccan Herald today also mentions opening of Sampaje ghats for light vehicles in a week's time:

Quote:
Sullia(DK dist), DHNS: Work on reopening the Sampaje Ghat road linking Madikeri and Mangaluru is going on at a rapid pace with officials hoping to allow light vehicles on the road which was ravaged by landslides last month.

With this, a major link between Bengaluru and Mysuru and coastal areas will be restored after a gap of 15 days. After the closure of both Sampaje and Shiradi routes, commuters to coastal areas had to endure the damaged Charmadi Ghat road or the circuitous route via Kudremukh.

Several tonnes of soil has been dumped into the three crevices between Madenadu and Sampaje. A major cut near Jodupala was 40 feet deep and nearly 100 metres long. The incessant rain has taken a break from Friday and officials are hoping that the window of opportunity will continue for two more weeks.

The ongoing work is a temporary arrangement aimed at clearing the road for cars and light vehicles and we hope to finish the work within a week. We hope the weather will allow us to complete the allied works,” PWD superintending engineer Raghavan said.
This only means good news for cars that can take either of these 2 options to reach Mangalore and avoid the Charmadi or Kuduremukha option completely since these will be flooded with commercial vehicles.

Mostly Charmadi and quite a few take the Kurudemukha route. There was a recent article on how constant flow of buses on Charmadi had made things worse.

Shiradi ghat is open now, only for light vehicles.

Yesterday Hindu (Newspaper) team went to the affected parts of the ghat, one of the pictures taken by their news photographer.

One of my freind's family left to Mangalore yesterday (8th Sep) by KSRTC. Once onboarded the bus, got a rude shock - Bus is going via Sivamogga and will go only till Udupi. They will have to manage to reach Mangalore on their own. Return jouney too start from Udupi.

Pls take note of this.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Question to anybody who has taken the Shiradi route in the last couple of days.

Is it safe enough for a late evening drive?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Are there any alternate, shorter routes between Murudheswar to Kukke that don't touch Mangalore [ self-driving] ?

Google Maps shows only one way that passes through Mangalore !

De-facto route to Kukke from Kundapur side is via Mangalore, however below routes are available if one is intending to visit Kukke directly, please note that once you deviate from Mangalore-Panvel highway, it is a 2 lane undivided country side road with decent tarmac.

1. Murudeshwara - Kundapura - Bramhavar - Hiriyadka - Karkala -Guruvayanakere - Uppinangady - Kadaba - Kukke.

2. Murudeshwara - Kundapura - Udupi[Ambagilu] - Manipal - Karkala - Guruvayankere-Uppinangady - Kadaba - Kukke.

Road condition:
Murudeshwara -Kundapura: 4 lane work is still in progress and frequent deviation and traffic are the things to watch out for.

Manipal-Hiriyadka: No latest update, experts can comment.

Bramhavar-Hiriyadka-Karkala: I took this route last year and it was decent to drive with less traffic. Post monsoon I expect it to develop some rough patches.
Karkala-Guruvayankere: Broken road but nothing alarming, low gc cars can easily sail through.

Guruyankere-Uppinangady-Kadaba-Kukke Subramanya: One of the best roads to drive in south canara, with no speadbreakers and minimal traffic you will enjoy the driving in this stretch.

Going via Mangalore is the fastest route , but if you are into leisure drive then I would recommend sticking to 2nd option. Hotel Sagar in Karkala and Hotel Aditya in Uppinangady can be considered for food breaks, with clean rest rooms and good food this has been the preferred stopovers.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Is it possible to travel from Sakaleshpur to Uppinangadi without personal vehicle? Is there any TT/Winger private taxis which are taking passengers through the ghat?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

How are the latest road conditions on Hassan - Chikkmagaluru - Agumbe section after the recent rain havoc? Should I take this route or go via Shiradi - Mangalore for a drive down to Kundapura?
