Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Why are you doing Tso moriri circut twice.
Do this

As for padum, padum is a 17 hours drive from Leh, minimum
So either do nubra-pangong-Tso moriri circuit, or if you want to do padum, you have to go via kashmir route, and come back via manali leh. Forget spiti, kishangarh narkanda is easily 20 hours

Fastest itenary from Delhi for leh/zanskar circuit

Delhi - Patnitop area
Patnitop area - Sonmarg
Sonmarg - Panikhar(Panikhar is 2-3 hours from kargil on the kargil-Padum link)
Panikhar padum
Padum - Panikhar/kargil
Kargil - Leh
Leh permits and rest
Leh - Turtuk - diskit
Diskit - Wari La - Pangong
Pangong - Chushul Tso moriri
Tso moriri - Jispa
Jispa - chandertaal losar (you will reach losar by late night as chandertaal entails a 3kms tough walk
Losar - Somewhere in kinnaur
Kinnaur - Delhi (15 hours)

http://www.openstreetmap.org has the entire ladakh region mapped (including chusul and tso moriri routes) and will give you a fair idea of location of various places

We are leaving from Bombay too on the 29th. Covering Zanskar, Leh, Nubra, etc and might be going to Chandertal too.
When are you leaving and how many days is your trip plan?

Maybe, if one is returning from Leh, avoiding Rohtang totally should make good sense. We are returning via Dalhousie n Sach Pass, though reports suggest that this route is also landslide prone.

AFAIK, Jay, drustogi trip plan is different from yours. He is going via KInnaur-Spiti while you are going via Srinagar-Kargil.

To avoid Delhi karnal ambala, you need to go via kishangarh, that is if you want to head straight towards srinagar.
However, in your case, if you can somehow time Delhi in the night, you will get lesser traffic(except truck traffic near gurgaon).

Alternatively, you can time it such that you reach Bhiwadi etc.,(100kms from Delhi) by late afternoon, rest and sleep, start at 3-4am next day, and simply cross karnal etc., before 8am.

Then you head to shimla highway, and do a night stop over at narkanda.
Next day, head to kaza from narkanda.
The next day start early, do chandertaal after crossing kunzum and come till sissu.
And finally do sissu - leh.

Re: Leh 2011 - Trip Planning - All queries go here

Tso kar is on the way when you go from Tso moriri - keylong.
there is no need to do it twice. Moreover, there is no facility of accomodation at Tso Kar, you will have to go to Tso moriri, and also have to get permits in advance.
Better to go to leh, and then do your circuit
1. Jispa leh
2. Permits in leh
3. Leh - Kargil (Drass is ahead of kargil) towards Srinagar, not on the Padum route. On padum route you can go till panikhar
4. Padum - leh is 17 hours minimum, panikhar leh is around 7 hours. Leh kargil is 7 hours, kargil to panikhar on the padum road is 3 hours
5. Agham shyok route is open, but there are no bridges, you need an offroader as water level is close to 4 feet. Do you have a 4WD?
6. Pangong tso - Tso moriri is doable in a day (10 hours)

Please go on NE1/NH8. I drove up and down on NE1/NH8 in last Nov/Dec. The 6/4-lane road was fantastic.

If you leave Jispa early morning before 7 am, you can easily reach Leh before evening. Roads are in good condition currently.

Camping - please do not camp on river banks - they see sudden flooding and can be very dangerous. Try to camp near army camps of which there are many. Weather conditions can change dramatically, and nights can be extremely cold on this road.

Yes, it is possible as HVK rightly says that you need to leave early. Since sun rises early - 5 AM - you should plan to leave by 6 AM atleast. See you have filled up your tanks as you iwll not see any ptrol bunks till Leh.

DO NOT camp close to rivers/streams. They may be inviting not worth the risk of flash floods. Around Jispa, you may not see flat grounds like Sarchu. But camp at high ground.

I am also not sure about your acclimitisation plan. Jispa is at lower heights and you start climbing immediately after that to Barlacha La at 16.5K feet, climbing down to 13K feet at Sarchu, then peaking at 17K feet at Tanglang La all in one day. It is risky if you are not properly acclimitised and will be prone to AMS.

If possible, i would recommend that you camp at Sarchu which has excellent camping ground, night views are amazing. If you are there on full mooon day, then you would just love camping in Sarchu. This will also help you to acclimitise better and allow to have a lazy drive to Leh next day enjoying amazing scenery enroute.
