This is a fairly common practice in top reserves of India such as Kanha, Ranthambhore and Bandhavgarh. In fact this arrangement is much better as there have been numerous instances of private vehicles flouting many park rules in reserves where they are allowed. In fact the only vehicles allowed in Kanha are petrol vehicles so only Gypsys are allowed there. Even Bandhavgarh has only gypsys for park tours.

I had been to Ranthambore in 2008 feb.I had been there from Jaipur.
I took the night train around 11.30pm reach Sawai Madapur at 3am.
Waited in the station till 4am then took an auto to reach the ticket counters at Ranthambore. As I had online booking it was easy.
I did see tigers and on the way back went to the fort and returned back to Jaipur by the afternoon train.
