Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Hi Guys,

I will be travelling to Tarkarli next week & confused whether to take the NH4 or NH17. I have travelled by both the roads to Goa & NH17 is more safe on a bike whereas NH4 with Family Car.

I need to know which should be better whilst travelling with the family. I have booked MTDC beach resort & check in time is 10 am. I plan to leave from Mumbai at about 4 am from Mumbai & thereafter drive safely to reach by 12 noon.

What is the route to Tarkarli via NH4 & how are the road conditions right now? Is it safe too? Also what are the places to see around Tarkarli?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Akshay Dere.

Its NH4.

mumbai-e way-pune-nh4-satara-kolhapur-city cross-radhanagari-phonda ghat-kankwali-malwan-tarkarli.

there will be no problem upto kolhapur,
you have to cross kolhapur city toward radhanagari road,
kolhapur radhanagari 55 km road is in good condition,
radhanagari-phonda ghat road passes through dense forest,
phonda ghat-phonda is relatively easy ghat, beware about oncoming vehicles, honk liberally at corners,
phonda to humbarat is @ 10-15 km district road,
humbarat is the place where you will join nh17,
turn left toward kankwali,
travel for 10-15 km and you are at kankwali,
there is right turn toward malwan from nh17 further kankwali[ don't rememeber the name of place right now],
right turn toward malwan,
travel for @35km and you are in malwan,
before entering the town of malwan, take left turn toward tarkarli,
travel for 6 km on this narrow scenic road and you are at mtdc.

You can also look at Chevy_Lover's Goa TL, where he took a similar route till Kankavali, but instead of Radhanagari he took the Gaganbawda ghat road.
He himself said its pretty desolate. So as per what AP said Radhanagari is a better and safer option. Here is the link to the TL:

re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

@AP , thanks for the quick reply & suggestion. Looks like the Radhanagari route looks more promising & less streachable..

@ ampere, you shouldn't have done this to me man... I spent more than 1 hours going through Chevy_Lover's Goa TL & I am already @ loss of words..what a detailed TL. I think I will stick to your/AP's & CL's suggestion to take the RG route.. Now off to his Udaipur TL.. :-)

Akshay,
Can you provide any insite on how the Radhanagari road was? I myself am thinking of venturing here along with my family. If there any snaps that you have clicked on you way that will also help me.

A related travelogue
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...nt-malvan.html

But the member used the Nippani-Radhanagari access rather than Kolhapur-Radhanagari road. But I guess its in a decent status and definitely better to take than Gaganbawda (as I learnt after going through Chevy_Lovers's log.)

re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Thanks Amp, This does help me. I am also inclined to take Radhanagari route and google maps says it’s a state highway. I also understand that its quite a scenic drive. I have checked with MTDC for the road quality and they are saying all roads are good. Some more research and I should be done.

I think it can accessed on the Nippai by-pass. Google Maps does not show it.
Look at MMI Maps.

Here is the link:

yep you're right I saw this on my mireopc. Anyidea how good this road to radhanagiri is? The whole route from Nh4 to NH17 is 85 kms so seems to be the shortest across comapred to all the other routes'
Cheers

re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Why would you need to come till Nippani? You might as well take the SH from Kolhapur right?
(I assume you would be coming from Pune side)

You're right but by driving further up to nippani, I may avoid kolaphur city, traffic et al. And I'm thinking the distance across (on State Highway) will be about 15 to 20 Kms less.

re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

while going to radhanagari from pune side, you have to cross kolhapur city and it is as bad as any other city.
Nipani-radhanagari is good option but not aware about road condition in this sector.
I hope, it is as good/bad as any border road.
Looking forward for update on this sector.

re: Mumbai - Tarkarli : Route Queries

Just back from a break spanning week, been to Kolhapur (stayed at MTDC Panhala : Mahalaxmi), Tarkarli( MTDC) and Goa ( Campola, Panjim). I suggest NH4 Pune-Kolhapur-Gaganbawda joining NH17 at Kankavali. The road condition is good.

PS: The Mahalaxmi MTDC is pathetic. Its pity that such a big and promising property is let down by poor service, apathy and unmaintained cottages. The restaurant was closed, reason being "cook on leave". I had to literally look around for the caretaker for checkin and the rooms were smelly, full of mosquitoes and with broken furniture. Thats some lesson for how not to develop tourism, wake up MTDC

Compared to that the MTDC,Tarkarlli is well maintained and nice view. The only suggestion is to AVOID restaurants at all costs (except tea/coffee)
