What about the Elantra?

With the money you are willing to shell out I think you should consider the Hyundai Elantra in the 6 to 7 lakh range. I think it is for 6.8 lakh after a bit of bargaining. This point was discussed here in the forum last month. Go to the dealer and ask his last quote. Bye and wear your seatbelts.

I dont think MMI should be a deciding factor in buying a car.

certainly its an asset but its just a luxury.

opel astra had it , skoda octavia has it too. it shows FE, mileage that can be covered, outside temp etc.

I would still recommend the octavia.

has got more poise value, better built and good highway stability.

here is the website www.skoda-auto.co.in

I dont see the 2.0 petrol here so I assume its discontinued. But if the dealer has it then it matches your need perfectly.

Even the TDI RIDer wont be bad at all.

The best bet would be to get in touch with the local dealer.

The base trim of the US 2006 Civic is pricier than the base version of Corolla by $500 or thereabouts. So I don't think the Civic in India is going to be cheaper than Corolla. Honda knows its brand equity, and is unlikely to be influenced by competition to price its cars 'aggressively'. Corolla starts at 11L on-road price, so I'm expecting that a low-end Civic will cost the same too, if not more.
