Hi, I'm in this same quandary upgrading from a 2005 City but have an added need for safety in the back seat since I fall asleep far too easily! :Shockked:
My usage is approx. 1200km/mo. Currently am considering the Verna Sx Opt (with 6 airbags) and Sunny XV Safety (with 4 airbags)... planning to TD next week. Should I be considering any others? please: Thanks,

Verna is a good car to buy as long as your commute is limited to mostly slow moving city traffic. In fact it is a very comfortable car in such scenarios. Problem starts only when you are on twisties or on high speed drives with sharp manoeuvers etc.

How about also having a look at the Ciaz? It is a very good car for those who are chauffered around. Oodles of space at the back, lot of features and in general should be a very safe although a bit of a plane jane car which should meet most of your demands.

Ciaz does look interesting... but has only 2 front airbags.

Another side question would be: how important and effective are these side/curtain airbags? there are contrary report online.

Re usage, mainly city driving including some on NH8 in Gurgaon!

I think as chauffeur driven cars go, look no further than the Sunny/Scala. Oodles of space, decent safety in the higher trims and super value for money. The City too has loads of space at the back and might well be worth considering, but the Sunny/Scala should do it for you.

Verna is terrific if you're usage is restricted to intracity commutes. It's a good reliable car, easy to maintain and run. :thumbs up

Try looking at the Ciaz if you're chauffeur driven. It's cheaper and will be cheap to run too. It doesn't have curtain sirbags though.

Sunny is a good choice given the Nissan dealer in your area in good. :Frustrati

Any inputs on airbags for the back? Worth focusing on this? Because it leaves me with only Verna or Sunny... if I drop it as an essential requirement, options grow to include Ciaz! And also look at another category ie Duster/Terrano...

Any inputs on what is preferred Sunny or Scala?
Any difference in the service or ownership level?

Please avoid the Verna if back seat is where you want to be. The Sunny is the car to go for in your case. And if you are comfortable with having only 2 Airbags then you can also check out the Etios once for the back seat comfort.

As a side note I have hardly seen any one using seat belts in the back in our country. In which case a Airbag may not help either.

Lastly I hope you didn't mean you fall asleep too easily while driving and thats why need a car with more airbags lol:.

The Sunny/Scala seems perfect. I would not recommend the Verna due to its bouncy nervous ride, but it has received a facelift that reportedly brings huge improvements, so if you're fine with the space in the rear bench, you might want to check out the Verna too (haven't driven the one with updated suspension so I can't say).

If you're feeling a little adventurous, do check out a used Teana :thumbs up nothing this side of 50 lakhs can compete with the car in terms of rear seat comfort

I actually have a feeling that curtain airbag will harm you if you're head is against the glass while sleeping.

Reason:
See how they deploy in these videos. They deploy from top to bottom and they may not offer protection in side impacts.

Give or take a few features and mechanically, there's hardly any difference between the two.

Both Renault and Nissan have a bad reputation for their ASS, so check which dealer in your city has a better reputation.

Also, I think the Scala is a little more expensive than the sunny.

Which one were you referring to : Sterling or Sarveshwar(?)

Am headed the sunny direction but am not comfortable with poor ASS

Nissan aftersales is not poor but it is not upto the Toyota standards either. Another grudge I have with Nissan is that even for the diesel variant they recommend service every 6 months/10k kms. And each service costs around 5k.

Before buying the Sunny, do check on the under thigh support. It may appear to be on the shorter side if you are tall.

Verna is a boat IMO(sorry owners, but I could not put it in a better way). Pathetic ride and hadling.

If you are stern on four airbags, sunny/scala is the choice for you. But if you can drop a couple of airbags, Ciaz is definitely worth a look. City is also a good overall package.

I need a safe back seat and since I use my cars for almost 10 years think I should get the rear airbags as it is only likely to get standard in a few years...

Should I be considering any preowned cars? That may not be popular but are solid workhorses...???

I am getting disillusioned with my hunt for a comfortable and SAFE chauffeur driven car.. as am discovering that in the C segment it seems there is no SAFE car for the rear seated passenger bar the Verna. As all the airbags are for the front seated passengers. Have I made the right analysis here? Help! please:

Hi All,

I was planning to buy a new SUV between 15-20L by June of this year coinciding with my birthday. But, the additional taxes on new cars in this budget have thrown a spanner in my plans.

Now I am planning to buy a used car, a Sedan or an SUV within 10L which will be used for the next two years. I am not new to used cars, in fact apart from my E2O all my other cars within my family were pre-worshipped cars and touch-wood, I never faced any issues with any of the cars.

My key requirements are as below
1. Safety (no compromise on this one, a minimum of 2 airbags and ABS with EBD)
2. Comfort for my parents in the rear seat with easy ingress and egress
3. Reliability
4. Relative ease of maintenance

This car will be driven by me most of the time and primarily used on long trips with very limited city driving. Fuel efficiency and choice of fuel is not a concern as long as the overall FE is around 10KMPL.

With the above criteria in mind I have shortlisted the following cars in the order of preference.
1. Toyota Corolla Altis
2. Honda CRV
3. Skoda Laura
4. Mahindra XUV500
5. Mitsubishi Outlander

Have ruled out Honda Civic due to low seating and ground clearance issue.
Safari Storme is also ruled out due to excessive body roll, my mother can get car sick quite quickly, so this was a concern with Storme.

I am leaning towards Corolla Altis as it is a good all round car. My only concern with Honda CRV is the ease of maintenance compared to Altis.
Any CR-V owners with their feedback on maintenance?

Are there are any other cars that I might have missed out on or that are worth a try?
