Which diesel ???

My dad finally decided to change his car.
He uses an esteem diesel at present and yesterday the car finally gave up. (It was just a battery problem and the car dint start.)

Now he wants a new diesel but going by his requirements there are very few available at the moment.

Budget below 10L (Ok maybe 15L if the car is really worth it)
He does a lot of highway runs (usually alone) and he lets every tom dick and harry drive his car So reliability is also a major concern.
Cheap maintainence is also important.

Okay summing up the priorities
  1. FE !! (12 atleast ?)
  2. Cheap maintainence
  3. Safety
  4. comfort
  5. performance
My dad has his eyes set on the elantra but I am not too eager.
Should we wait or go ahead with the elantra or may be the Tuscon

Help needed as soon as possible

Thanks in advance

Both Elantra and Tuscon has teh same gr8 engine. But maintainence would be cheaper for Elantra in long run as the Tuscon is a CBT or so and costly parts. I think it should be a Elantra , but a fully loaded one with ABS, Airbags and sort. YOu hate Elantra for its looks?

Skoda was good, but you said cheap maintainence and hence its out. Fiesta for regular highway, no re.

@mistaken; His budget is 10-15lac.

Yup I hate the elantra for its looks ...
Skoda was damn good but after hearing all the horrifying service costs we changed our minds.
I just checked out the autocar website and in this issue they have details about new diesel cars to hit the indian market. I think I should check that out ..

I hate the fiesta so there is no way we are going to buy that car.
And i have driven it for nearly 300kms

In your budget and requiements you have the best bet with Hyundai.
1. Elantra : Extreme VFM package, but bad looks.
2. Verna : Sept Launch

Above 10L there is skoda and Tuscon, but skoda has high maintainance and Tuscon has it on the higher side too because of CBU. Also the FE will be below 12 in town.

So if you dont want to buy the Elantra it leaves you with Fiesta and Verna which fit your requirements. Verna is coming in Sept, so if you can wait, it will be great.

Cool dude i think u should definately wait for the verna. It is supposed to be comming with a 4 cylinder CRDI engine option pumping out 110 bhp and will obviously give decent mileage as its a crdi engine as crdi engines are know for giving amazing mileage figures(accent crdi). It will give amazing performance and will leave many top end car to dust in performance stakes and well fits within your bugest. What say guys?

no, Elantra is one class up( D) and hence wont replace the Verna. Teh initial reports by various sites say taht the Verna is a good car, bigger and better. Do check threads abt the same .

IMHO it has 2 b ford fiesta. its reporting an average of 18-20 in the city so i guess even with the higher maintainance that people associate with ford it should b a good buy.

Not much, just about 5rs/km approx maintainance costs. You will be better of with a petrol car. And if you blow something fancy, be ready to sell a maruti 800 to buy the part.
