Hello Guys,

Since the Ciaz has now launched officially along with a beautiful TD report by Aditya, I decided to do a comparison of the Ciaz with Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and Fiat Linea.

I have compared each of the 4 cars individually with the Ciaz to keep it simple and easy to understand.

Hope it does help members who are looking at a comparison between these cars.

MARUTI SUZUKI CIAZ

What you'll like:

• Clean styling & big footprint. Among the longest & widest sedans from its class
• Spacious cabin with lots of practical features. Rear legroom is particularly impressive
• Diesel & petrol, both, have segment-topping ARAI fuel efficiency ratings
• Soft, compliant ride quality. A suspension that's tuned for comfort
• Big 510 liter boot will swallow your airport & holiday luggage
• Maruti's excellent after-sales service, wide dealer network & fuss-free ownership experience
• Loaded with equipment (7" touchscreen ICE, navigation system, rear sunshade, leather seats, keyless entry & go, reversing camera etc.)

What you won't:

• 1.3L diesel can't match the performance of the Vento, Verna & Rapid. Has turbo-lag too
• 1.4L petrol has the lowest power rating in the segment. City i-VTEC & Vento TSI are in a different league
• Uninvolving to drive. Steering & dynamics aren't to an enthusiast's taste
• Mediocre under-thigh support of the low rear seat. Also, limited rear headroom for 6 footers
• Some might find the styling to be too bland. Rear end is uncannily similar to the Honda City
• Light build quality. Lacks the sheer solidity of its European rivals

HONDA CITY

What you'll like:

• Practical diesel, fast petrol and convenient CVT. Take your pick
• Loaded with equipment (sunroof, feather-touch climate control, keyless entry & go, rear air-con, reversing camera)
• Extremely spacious cabin. Loads of sensible touches make it easy to live with
• Diesel & Petrol, both, have segment-topping ARAI fuel efficiency ratings
• Big 510 liter boot will swallow your airport & holiday luggage
• Light controls, slick gearshift and easy maneuverability for the city. Effortless to drive
• Honda's reliability & fuss-free ownership experiences

What you won't:

• Same diesel as the Amaze. Outright performance & refinement levels are lower than the Verna, Vento & Rapid
• Front looks like a mere facelift. Too similar to the outgoing car. Garish chrome grille too
• Skinny 175 mm tires & boring alloy wheel design. Both need to be upgraded
• Light build quality. Lacks the sheer solidity of its European rivals
• Electric steering remains light & sensitive at high speed. No feedback either
• 6 footers will find rear headroom to be in short supply
• Some features missing (proper dead pedal, folding rear seat, height-adjustable seatbelts, boot lid cladding)

HYUNDAI VERNA

What you'll like:

• A great looking Hyundai sedan
• Well-packaged; sufficient room front & back
• Competent 1.6L power plants, especially torquey diesel. Wide range of engines & transmissions on offer
• Ride quality & behavior in the city
• Several segment-first features (reversing camera, keyless entry & go, electric folding mirrors and more)
• Top notch safety equipment including 6 airbags, ABS + EBD, all wheel disc brakes etc.

What you won't:

• High speed ride quality isn't flat. Suspension, especially on uneven roads, gets wallowy
• 4 speed Automatic gearboxes. This segment calls for a 5 speed
• Under-thigh support of the low rear seat not as good as that of competition

VOLKSWAGEN VENTO

What you'll like:

• A well-built, robust, European sedan
• Clean and contemporary styling. Boot is superbly integrated.
• Stunning diesel engine. Mature suspension setup. Balanced ride & handling
• Segment firsts: Reach adjust steering, gear recommender, adjustable driver armrest etc.
• 1.5L TDI + 7-Speed DSG has come on offer in the 'New Vento'.
• Safety features start from base variants.
• DSG variants get ESP and Hill-hold function

What you won't:

• Electric power steering. The Vento deserves a pure hydraulic unit
• Quite a loud & clattery diesel engine
• Below-average after-sales service & support quality
• VW's long-term reliability and ownership costs are unknown

FIAT LINEA

What you'll like:

• The facelift still looks good compared to the competition, but bring the older Linea into picture, the older one looks far more clutter less and the timeless design stands out.
• High quality chrome on the exterior.
• The interiors have been revamped with the dashboard being new and bring in the freshness to the cabin.
• A couple features have been added on the already feature rich car. The inbuilt navigation and reverse camera would have been icing on the cake
• All the positives of the earlier Linea are very much present in the facelift. Excellent build quality, the ride quality and handling, steering feedback, superb braking ability are to name a few.
• The Linea facelift comes with the 1.4 Tjet motor as standard in the petrol engine department
• The car finally gets 3 bottle holders at the cost of the arm rest space
• Huge 500 litre boot
• The reverse parking sensors are standard on the dynamic and emotion variants.
• The Automatic Climate control is good, but the not as effective as the ones that were available in the Tjet and Tjet+ Variants that were launched in 2010. The AC vents have directional as well flow control now.
• Placement of the Aux and USB port, it's no longer a trouble to use
• 3 Year standard warranty with an option of 2 years extended warranty with coverage for 150,000 kms
• A+ braking capability for the T-Jet. All-round disc brakes a segment first and top level of equipment (including leather seats, Blue & Me, rear air-con and more)

What you'll not:

• The Linea facelift deserved to have the 1.6 MJD under the hood for the diesel segment
• The interior space packaging not as great the Japanese counterparts.
• The lesser headroom in the rear for taller people
• The low speed ride might put off the chauffer driven kind of customers, but they will appreciate the ride when the speeds increase.
• The arm rest is more or less present just as a requirement as the space is sacrificed for a bottle holder
• The spare wheel is now a steel wheel and not an alloy wheel unlike the pre 2013 models for emotion variant.
• Increased weight on the facelift across variants and more so on the top end variant.
• Niggling issues & irritants (as reported by existing Linea / Punto owners)
• Below average after-sales service quality

Tata Manza

What you'll like:

• Extremely neutral family sedan. Well rounded 6 - 7 lakh rupee car
• Fuel-efficient 1.3 diesel engine. Nice gearbox too
• Unreal back seat comfort. Interior space comparable to two segments higher
• Excellent ride quality. Acceptable handling
• Build quality, fit and finish are way improved. No longer a major turnoff
• Respectable level of equipment and safety kit
• Sheer value for money pricing

What you won't:

• Tata needs to prove that it can consistently mass produce niggle-free cars
• Interior fit & finish still have room for improvement. Below average in some areas
• Lack of outright performance
• Inconsistent after-sales network

Skoda Rapid

What you'll like:

• A well-built European car
• Better package than the Vento at a lower, VFM price
• Superb diesel engine; good driveability and 250 Nm of torque
• Mature ride & handling setup
• Confidence inspiring dynamics, brakes and chassis
• Easy to drive Automatic transmission. Different modes to suit your style of driving
• 1.5L TDI + 7-Speed DSG has come on offer.

What you won't:

• Skoda's scary after-sales-service
• Petrol engine isn't as impressive as the diesel
• Tall rear floor hump makes the Rapid more suited as a 4 seater, than 5

Ford Fiesta:

What you'll like:

• Futuristic front-end & stylish dashboard design
• Great feature set including voice activation, auto-fold mirrors, cruise control, and more
• ABS and Dual-airbags are standard across the range, including the entry variants
• Ford’s torquey, fuel-efficient diesel engine
• Excellent driving dynamics and impressive steering feel for an EPS

What you won't:

• No Petrol engine in the range and No AT boxes too. An opportunity missed by Ford.
• Priced significantly higher than its competitors
• Disproportionate rear end due to excessive bulk behind the rear wheel arches
• Interiors at the rear look and feel like they are from a segment lower
• At low speeds, the suspension firmness accentuates the imperfections of the road

Considering the Fiesta just got a fresh breath of life and the Rapid now comes with more features and engine/gearbox options, perhaps they ought to have been added to the list as well?
