if you are planning for some urban and rural travel i feel ground clearance would be required. check out the sx4.

If you are looking at quality go for the Honda.

If you are looking for a diesel at that price range go for the fiesta.

And why did you not consider the fusion. its got enough and more space and good ground clearance.

The Fiesta has a great reputation, but I sat in one and felt that everything about it just shouted Ford! at me.

That might make some people buy it. It made me get out. Even the Swift has more character.

Go for Fiesta

I too was torn like you between NHC VTEC and Fiesta 1.6. I test drove both, and my heart said 'Go for Fiesta', and I did. I have no regrets so far---bought my car in March. I test drove the SX4 last week and found it to be no match for the Fiesta in terms of ride, performance , cooling and handling. Only things in its favour are airbags and better ground clearance.
Take my advice, test drive all 3 and decide for yourself.
Best of luck.
