Id suggest you an Opel Astra anyday since most of your driving will be on the highway.
Its one of the most safest and solidly built cars you can get.
Fuel Effeciency wont be a problem on the highways and it can give upto 15 or more with AC.
In the city, anywhere between 5-7 depending on AC usage and how many ppl.
Plus on the bright side, it comes with power windows, central locking and what not.

On the downside though, maintainance will be on the higher side but then again, for any BIG car which you buy, it will be quite high anyway.

Hey Pingping,
It's nice to hear your big dreams about big cars. But if you get stuck with a lemon, all those dreams will get shattered and your money will go down the drain.
So stick to the tried and tested cars which are easy to maintain and still relatively inexpensive to purchase. Try not to rule out the good old Esteem only because it's common. It's common because it's popular, popular because it's good. I'd say even an Accent is a great car which is very reliable, old but classy and relatively inexpensive to run. But getting one for 1.25L is almost next to impossible!
Corsa may be available in your price range if you search hard, but it may be a little expensive to maintain.
I would say settle for a Maruti 1000 or an Esteem. Else, stretch your budget and go for an Accent. You will not regret it!
All the best,
Harsha

IMHO dont go for any of the escorts or Astras as the spares would be a pain in the @$$, and will cost you a fortune as well.
Go for something which will be easily available.

PS: i dint bother to go through the rest of the posts. Just wanted to keep it short and simple.

If you don't have a problem with parking space, I would suggest you look around for a Contessa

My sincere opinion would be a NO even if the car was given free to you.Or else if you are that adamant go for 2 or three escorts so that the spares issue could be tackled to an extend.
When you have other options available why the escort and i am damn sure you wont find any good escort nowadays.

People say spares are not possible to get for Ford Escort... is it impossible or will become a big problem that it would halt the car in case of any repairs. (i'm using Yamaha RX100 but still my mechanic is able to fix all probs and get spares)

noway jose !!

ford essort is a complete no no

not worth at all instead go for an esteem

one more thing.

The number of parts as well as complexity varies greatly between a bike and a car.
for example: in case you don't get a certain part you can get it fabricated real cheap in case of a bike. In case of a car man you are in for trouble.

No. of parts in car >> No. of parts in a bike.

So I should say stop the comparison and go for something which will be trouble free as this will be your first car.

Safe driving.

Cheers

Any point in buying a used Ford Escort?

Hi friends,

Friend of mine has been offered a Diesel Ford Escort 1997 STD model for around Rs 40k. The car has got around 80k in the odo. Exterior Condition is OK and the Engine seems to be good, checked by a friend who is a Car Dealer. Would it be advisable to go for it??

Please advice!!!

Thanks in Advance!!

80K means engine needs an overhaul soon. Finding parts for it will be a big headache. So in my opinion, stay away from it.
