Sedans
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/sedans/)
all the pros and cons are listed above, and there is one more thing i want to add to it!
you see the meaning of a hatch and a sedan are presumed differently in India,
the skoda RS, accent VIVA , chevy SRV and palio are hatchs but they still have reasonably good wheel base lengths that actually are on par with sedans on the handling part!,
and a sedan any day has a better wheel base and better handling on the high way and better space on the whole!
this being one of the major difference the better HANDLING thus SAFETY!
the others like price, space, convenience and other issues have already been discussed above!
if really want a VFM car with lots of power at present the hatch available is GETZ which is pulled by 110 horses! never the less this car loses only because of the space otherwise a good handler and a bit higher on the price!
you if are okay with the lesser power, take a good look at the Indigo Compact Sedan TDi with roughly 70 horses!
at around 5lacs OTR it falls under the steal deal category!
i suggested these cars in the budgets of around the sx4 and the zxi swift as you mentioned these!
Good points presented so far. Handling, space, prestige, power, etc.
One more point, Resale value. Sedans often get much better resale prices than hatches and SUVs.

i dont think that can be generalized like this! like i said it totally depends on the car at least here in India!, and compared to the international market, the definition of the sedans, and hatches are different when it comes to India so do the resale values
the car's brand value/spares/ how long the car has been in the market etc! takes the credit in the resale aspect!
hey is it a debate between sedan and hatches or is it safari or a sedan -which is a better buy.safety and comfort of a safari or say any sedan is relative and depends on the usage of the vehicle.we can have a more fruitfull debate if more details are thrown in .the thread starter is seen nowhere now.

Show me one hatch which is faster than a Skoda RS :P. The only fast hatch I can think of is the Getz CRDi.

Show me one hatch which drinks more fuel then the RS. The only more drinking hatch i can think of is the Palio 1.6 :p

precisely...and what are your priorities for the new car - am asking this bcos this is in the what car forum...
or are u just opening a debate on sedan vs hatch...
that again is very usage dependent. both have their pluses and minuses
@Jerish; I'm talking about India. Whats the point of counting the number of apples in someone else's orchard. Also even there, the sedans are faster than hatches. Whats the fastest hatch one can think of? The Golf VR6/GTi which is still a puny 250bhp... nothing compared to sedans.

The price depreciation will be more on sedans than hatches !
Note : Exceptions may be there !

Specs not right my friend. Am not sure about Cedia, but turning radius for Swift is 4.7m
Maruti Swift - Specifications Diesel
I would suggest a sedan instead of an SUV anyday.

Get your facts right.
Swift has a turning radius of 4.7 m.
You are confused between Swift and Palio. Its the Palio whose TR is 5.1m.
ok,ok now if its a question of hatches better than sedans or sedans better than the htches -
why are most of the players in wrc turning to hatches rather than sedans .simple answer -they are not on a holiday and dont need a boot and if they need more power to weight in the machine why not shave the boot off .there is no difference between a hatch and a sedan other than boot.
can we have the thread starter now so that we can ask what was his intention.
request to mods-no meaning in the discussion going on like this as most of the postings have no connection with the heading of the thread..

The octavia is not really a sedan, its a notchback.
hay dude sedan's are better option on highway because if you are a safety freak then sedans can be life save of the person sitting in the back if there is a impact from behind in any chance of high speed driving
where as in small cars cant handle that much impact from the back if any hachbacks are useful in city driving where there is less space for making cuts in lane changing
i think that both serve different purpose so it all depend on the road you are driving dude
A hatch is a Hatch.. A sedan is a sedan and A SUV is a SUV. All three are different segments and each have advantages/disadvantages.
Generally in terms of performance/Looks/Image
SUV > Sedan > Hatch (I said generally, dont compare extreme cases. Example - skoda vs safari. everything in the world has an exception :))
In terms of utility/city usage and point A to B commute
Hatch > Sedan > SUV (Again in general)
So you see.. sedan is the mid performer in both the cases and offers a little bit of both worlds.
