midsizer dilemma

I am starting this thread on my friends behalf. The story so goes that they own a Maruti 1000 since 1997, its a 1993 model thus served for long. They are planning a replacement.
They are used to sedans and don't want to compromise on the cabin or the boot space. The shortlisted replacements are Hyundai Accent and Ford Ikon 1.6.
Have heard maintenance woes about Ford Ikons, I beg to differ. The father according to them 'flies' on seeing open roads. Usage is in the range of 500 kms a month. Want fellow Team-bhp members and gurus to give their suggestions. The criteria for selection are-

1) Serviceablity

2) Maintenance costs

3) Fuel Efficiency

4) Space

5) Drivability

PS- They are looking for only used cars.
