Used Sedan: Budget 4 lakhs

Folks I need to buy a car for my parents which would not be used very extensively but occasionally. The car will do both plains and hills whenever it is used. My budget is around 4 Lakhs. The options I have zeroed on are:-
1. OHC
2. Corrola
3. Baleno
4. W124 E250. I know in case I can lay my hands on this I will use it and pass on my own car to the parents.
5. Accent CRDI/Executive: Reading a lot of horror stories about major works on CRDI after 50-60K Kms so am planning to eliminate this option. Petrol Accent can still be considered depending upon the feedback from gurus and owners.

I need advise and comments on my options particularly about known issues on a high mileage car in each category, approximate cost of spares and their availability (in and around Chandigarh/Delhi), and prices to expect.

Barring W124 I would like the car to be about 5- 6 year old maximum with about 50K or less on the odo. How much would an Accent Executive cost considering it is a relatively new offering in the market?

Thanks, I am looking forward to have your comments and advise.

I guess the Toyota Corolla would be the best as its much more loaded than the other cars on your list. And its also more upmarket as well.

You could also check out for the previous gen Honda Accord's. They are awesome cars and will fall in your budget as well.

There is a 2005 Baleno LXI done 40,000 Kms for about 2,50,000 INR. The condition fo the car is yet to be checked. What should be a good price for this car?

I would suggest that you chose either a Baleno or a OHC. IMO, Accord will command a high cost of spares, considering the fact that they will be 5-6 yrs old. You might consider an used Cedia as well, though I am not sure whether it will fit your budget.

Take my advice....go for a NEW Ford Ikon 1.4 TDCI. Same diesel engine as in Fiesta.
Enjoy great pickup, handling, power, build quality and EVEN GREATER DIESEL FUEL ECONOMY(22 kmpl)
thats what my bro is getting on the recently purchased Ikon TDCI

You can't beat that for 5 LACS flat, can you?

you can surely get a 2006 Cedia in decent condition for about 4 lakhs in Delhi. It would be amazing bang for yur buck. Accord will be very expensive to maintain but if that is ok with you then that too is a good option. OHC although a gem would be quoite old and would have its own share of problems depending on the way it was maintained by previous owners.

Not too sure about Baleno's spare parts availability. maybe existing owners can clarify that better.

Within your choice-set Corrola looks the best.

IMO you should also consider NHC. You can get a good NHC from around 2005 for that much money in Delhi/NCR. Mileage is good and cost of spares also reasonable. There are no long term issues with the car as well. I sold mine after 125k on the odo . The only significant expense it needed was a suspension overhaul (costing about 12k) near the 110k mark.

A much more sensible choice than the OHC. Spares are not a problem like in the OHC.

Wanderernomad, are your folks going to self-drive or be chauffeur-driven?

For the latter, a used Corolla or new Indigo CS / Ikon TDCi are well suited. On the other hand, if they will drive themselves, you must consider an NHC CVT (automatic).

If it is for your parents, then I guess you would want the interior and comfort top notch as first priority. Corolla fits the bill but they'll be 6 years old at 4 L. I suggest you look at the Optra also, it's great in comfort. Have a look at the Indigo or the Manza too. NHC is a good option but I won't suggest OHC, Baleno since the interiors are not too hot. A wild card entry from comfort point of view could be the Sonata. They come cheap (a V6 AT in superb condition was offered to me for 3.4-3.5 L) too.

I think you should be able to get a decently kept Optra in this Budget, all other that you have mentioned would have higher mileage & older in this budget.

Skip the Corolla, you would be getting a pre-facelift version, with the old suspension which isn't the best.
Similarly, avoid the Accent, the rear seating isn't the most comfortable.
For older people, higher cars are generally better such as a 2005 NHC EXi/GXi.
Infact, you could even look at 2003-04 Sonatas as well.

If you are looking at a loan for the car, given that used car interest rates are higher, you could look at a new Ikon, or Indigo. For a slightly higher EMI, you would get a new car, which would work out cheaper in the long run.
