Re: Metallica in Bangalore - 30 Oct 2011: Possible TBHP Meet

I'm not sure how much of this article is true, but if it is, then I'm not going to attend any concert/event organised by DNA ever. To be frank, I won't be shocked to here this really happened after their Delhi messup.

Quote:
The Metallica show was awesome. It gave a lot of people what they were waiting for. It even gave some folks new iPhones, MP3 players and laptops. A day later as I write this, the band’s gone, the crowd’s gone, our belongings are gone and all that remain are some horrifying memories of a night that should have been epic.

Prologue:

Most of the tickets booked on the last few weeks never got delivered to their owners. Instead, they bounced back and each fan was forced to go the venue to collect their passes. The security was so intense at the ticket counter on the day before the event that it took me 3 long hours to get hold of my pass and the queue was all of fifty people long! We thought DNA’s certainly learnt its lesson from the Delhi debacle.

What happened before the concert:
  • Gates open at 4:30 P.M. letting in an ocean of 25000 fans.
  • Everyone is frisked at the main entrance, where fans are told that Backpacks are not allowed inside the venue. So, the folks travelling after the concert and others who’ve brought their backpacks to keep their belongings dry in the pouring rain, have no choice but to leave it at the ‘baggage counter’.
  • Just like the secret ingredient in Mr. Ping’s noodle soup, The ‘baggage counter’ is NOTHING! There is no baggage counter. The master plan that DNA had cooked up left us fans gaping! They are instructed to leave their bags in an open ground (completely filled with mud), stacked one over the other. Out in the rain. Nothing to keep our belongings safe from the rain OR the muck.
  • Left with no other option, fans decide to leave their belongings in the muck counter. Now comes the best part. DNA refuses to give tokens to the owners of the property, thereby escaping from additional responsibility and also destroying any chance of cataloging the items.
  • So, all in all, the counter organized for the Metallica fans was an open ground right outside the main entrance. There were no records, no tokens, no security and no protection from the rain.
  • And this was the infrastructure setup for fans paying 2750/- per ticket.
What happened after the concert:
  • Having left my backpack at the muck counter and being highly unsure about its safety, me and my friends got out early from the show. What we found at the muck counter was just an awe inspiring scene.
  • Bags were strewn around on the ground, trampled over by fans as well as locals.
  • What was happening was unclear, but after observing for a few minutes, we noticed some random men checking backpacks looking for heavy ones and waking away with them.
  • Worse, little kids were opening the backpacks in situ and pulling out headphones, goggles and iPods out of bags and walking away.
  • There was not a single cop stationed at the spot. One security guard was present, taking care of about one thousand bags and dealing with about the same number of exasperated people.
Now, the folks who went for the show and somehow managed to find their belongings probably already know this much. What happened next was something that only a few unfortunate folks had to experience.

What happened next:
  • Having unsuccessfully searched for our belongings for over 2 hours, about 100 fans realized that their stuff was just not there. We started looking at other possibilities.
  • A couple of the fans waiting suddenly saw a guy picking up two backpacks, looking around and walking away with them. They chased him, caught him and brought him to the crowd, introducing him as the solution to our problem.
  • Soon, angry fans spotted another guy doing the same, and caught him as well.
  • The two gentlemen were turned over to the cops, who started shouting and swearing to the crowd about how they should not have brought their backpacks to the venue.
  • The cops roughened up the suspects a bit and took them to the High Grounds police station, without a word to the stranded fans. No information was given about what was to happen to them, if a case would be registered or if our testimonies would be required.
  • In the meantime, another fan spots a guy sneaking into an adjacent wedding hall with a backpack. A few people follow him into the hall and find a stash of 15 empty backpacks, all meticulously cleared of their contents.
  • This is reported to the cops, who rush to the venue and instruct the hall personnel to lock down the hall from inside. Those of us who could understand Kannada made out the words “Your work’s done, now close the *ing door”, said by a cop to who seemed like the supervisor of the hall.
  • Confused fans who now see some hope, start milling up in front of the wedding hall. The next part is the one that made our night.
  • COPS WHIP OUT LATHI’s AND START BEATING UP THE CROWD. DOZENS OF PEOPLE INCLUDING GIRLS, ARE BEATEN UP AND CHASED OUT OF THE AREA. CHAOS FOLLOWS.
  • Fans run from the venue and those who tried to talk calmly to the higher ranking cops were beaten up more.
  • Adding insult to injury, the two suspects who were earlier taken to the police station were brought back and released right in front of the crowd. Unscathed and free to go, they go INTO the wedding hall and lock it again.
  • We then went to the high Grounds police station, were we were informed that a complaint could not be lodged as it was ‘late at night’. The cops stated the reason that their superior was not present, and without him, a case could not be registered.
So there we were, lost in the middle of the night, a few tens of thousands rupees worth of belongings cheaper, having none to go to. DNA denied any responsibility. So did the cops. And to emphasize that point, they beat us up with lathis. Who’s going to return Anuj his laptop, external hard disk and 4 months’ worth of research notes? Who will return the couple from Malaysia their flight tickets, passports and money? What will happen to the iPods and iPhones that went missing? And what of the dozens of passports and ID cards? Frankly, we don’t know.

DNA will have to pay. So will the cops.

We will pursue the case with all we have. But well, we don’t know. Spread the word. This could have been you.

I think DNA is perfectly capable of such a screw up.

Read something similar in paper today. Not sure if it's DNA's fault or Ticketgenie's. They were the ones manning everything. They could have easily organised it better without even having to think much.

I was there to collect my pass as well. It's took me 3 hours, it would easily have been a couple of hours more had I not got the tickets through other means. The first thing which hit us was, there was no one to man the crowd which kept on increasing. I was pleasantly surprised that the crowd behaved remarkably well in-spite of the mismanagement/no management.

Later, when we were going in, I did see the security personnel asking the guy in front of me to keep the bag there (a heap) without any token.

Looks like DNA have lost the art of managing gigs like this. It was never this bad before.

At least show was awesome and it didn't rain when Metallica were playing.

Ticketgenie takes care of only the ticketing. Event management is done by DNA. So it's DNA's fault.

I heard about the mud and slush from another friend as well.

I actually found it quite silly that people were ready to leave their bags with laptops, important documents, ipods, passports and what not without any acknowledgement. Those are things far more important than a rock concert.

Either they should have dropped out or raised hell at the venue. The organisers should pay for such mess ups.

In this day and age why would anyone bring a laptop for a concert? People should have refused to drop the bag on the ground. Also am amazed that someone left their passport on the ground with zero security to watch a rock concert. Ofcourse it is DNAs fault. But people who agreed to dump the bag on ground are equally responsible. People are scared to leave their slippers outside temples without token, and here we are talking about laptop, iPhone and passport. It's very strange.

Have to totally agree here!

Sorry but comeon - you know these things happen! If I left a set of clothes in a bag, I don't mind losing it but did you really expect someone to take care of the bags - when they showed how much they cared when they asked you to leave it out in the open? Lost em senses?

Wonder who takes the cake for being the bigger IDIOT - the organisers or the fan?
Why would anyone dump expensive electronics/documents in the middle of nowhere, without any security or identity

Hell, i grill the poor guy manning the chappal counter at temples before i entrust my 100/- bucks Bata to him.

DNA, theives and cops are all laughing their way to the bank thanks to some idiot fans and their carelessness. Those who lost stuff fully deserved it.

Re: Metallica in Bangalore - 30 Oct 2011: Possible TBHP Meet

eh?
At the delhi venue they let peopel with bags in somewhat, after cursory checks.
Hmm, could it be that the staff already were aware that the concert was going to get cancelled???
As for the fans being idiots, I am sure they'd have tried exploring a lot of other options before opting to drop the nags on the ground.
But hey, getting anything there was, granted, a mistake.

after all, metallica(now at least) aint coming back!

Looks like Ticketgenie might be part of DNA, they share the same address. The envelop I have from Ticketgenie also has the same address. Snap of DNA address in TOI advertisement (from the Delhi Metallica thread).

Re: Metallica in Bangalore - 30 Oct 2011: Possible TBHP Meet

I was at the concert myself and I've to say, the organisation was pathetic. The frisking was useless; people bought in loads of smokes and marijuana easily.

However, these are expected in such shows, so let's move on. I agree with everyone here when they say you should be careful about your belongings especially documents like passports! We consciously made it a point not to even wear a wrist watch and avoid carrying cards. My sympathies to those who had a bad experience, but it's a lesson learnt I suppose.

Re: Metallica in Bangalore - 30 Oct 2011: Possible TBHP Meet

I had an awesome time at the concert. Easily the biggest I have ever attended. My guesttimate is at least 50,000 people attended, possibly 60,000.

Metallica placyed for two and a half hours! The energy displayed by James and Lars alone would put bands half their age to shame.

Hammett was his usual self, tons of mistakes in almost every solo. The crowd seemed highly impressed by some improvs he was pulling off, well whatever works for them! Trujillo's basswork was spot-on: I had never heard Metallica after they got him on board, so it was a revelation.

The setlist delighted me the most: Hetfield announced "We heard you guys like it heavy!" before launching into Sad But True, one of my favourites. And James' guitar tone on Nothing Else Matters was to die for!

We were almost dead centre having entered from the left right next to the central tower and had excellent audio throughout. There were some glitches like lead guitar cutting out etc. but overall the quality was passable. I have heard worse on Palace Grounds.

Monaro CV8 called me after the show but we couldn't even find members of our own party let alone someone else Trudged all the way to Windsor Manor afterwards and ate what is possibly the most delicious meal I have ever had along with some of the sweetest water I have ever drunk in my life: remember we were standing for over 6 hours without anything to eat or drink.

The Pune-Bangalore roadtrip (2 cars and 2 bikes) is a whole different (and even more awesome) story.Stay tuned: to be featured in Travelogues section soon!

I was part of the show and it was the most awesome experience ever and none of what is written happened as the crowd was behaving their best.

Come on, someone who comes to a concert with a camera, laptop, expensive valuables have only themselves to blame. The ticket had clearly written instructions at the back on such things.

Discount that write-up

Yeah, I had guessed the crowds to be 40,000. But, I am sure it could have been easily more and overall, the show was a huge success and the gods of metal didnt disappoint and their energy was simply unbeilevable.

Overall, VFM for every rupee spent for the 2.5 hour show !!!

Btw, I hated them for not playing "Turn the Page" and Unforgiven 1 or 2

I recall they playing the following. Some of them I couldnt recognize the songs :-

Fuel
Master of Puppets
Sad but true ( my all time fav)
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Seek and Destroy
One
Fade to Black
Creeping Death
The memory remains

+1 to that. In fact for the Delhi (supposedly) Metallica concert, we left our purses, watches & mobiles (the high end ones) at home and came there only with some cash & an identity card.

But then a lot of concerts/events don't really enforce all their instructions - for e.g. the F1 race also had a lot of similar rules, but by the race day, most of it was relaxed.
