Re: The Football Thread

Yeah, good match although I was expecting at least a couple of goals from the trio. I saw the first half of the first leg and the second half today. Juventus was clearly the better team.

Watching a sport where you support neither team is very relaxing

Re: The Football Thread

Madrid were much better in the second half, deserved to win.

Sergio Ramos is an absolute disgrace to football.

Re: The Football Thread

Well what a match! To put in 4 goals against a team having arguably the best defence is something to talk about. Juventus was better in first half but think they lost steam in the second half. Was rooting for RM and was glad they won. Hiring Zizou is turning out to a master stroke by Perez. I hope the association continues for a long time, well atleast for next 3-4 years and they get more silverware.

Re: The Football Thread

Let me revive this dormant thread!

Has anybody been following the transfers going around? Just yesterday PSG broke the record by almost double the amount for Neymar Jr, by paying 222m for his signature. I for one can't understand what made him choose PSG over Barcelona. The thought of him being the talisman for the club just like Messi and Ronaldo for their respective clubs (as is the money) might have motivated Neymar.

Some of the transfers (that I have followed) until now :

EPL :

1. Romelu Lukaku - Everton -> Manchester United (85m)
2. Alvaro Morata -> Real Madrid -> Chelsea (65m)
3. Bernardo silva - Monaco -> Manchester City (50m)
4. Ederson - Benfica -> Manchester City (40m)
5. Nemanja matic - Chelsa ->Manchester United (40m)
6. Victor Lindelof - Benfica -> Manchester United(35m)
7. Danilo - Real Madrid -> Manchester City (30m)
8. Iheanacho - Manchester City -> Leicester City (28m)
9. Javier Hernandez - Bayer Leverkusen -> West Ham (18m)
10. Bertrand Traore - Chelsea -> Lyon (10m)
11.Wayne Rooney - Manchester United -> Everton ()
12.Joe Hart - Manchester City -> West Ham (Loan)
13. John Terry - Chelsea -> Aston Villa (free)

La Liga :

1. Neymar Jr - Barcelona -> PSG (222m)
2. Alvaro Morata - Real Madrid -> Chelsea (65m)
3. Theo Hernandez - Athletico Madrid -> Real Madrid (30m)
4. Nelson Semedo - Benfica -> Barcelona (30m)
5. Dani Ceballos - Real Betis -> Real Madrid(17m)
6. Adnan Januzaj - Manchester United -> Real Sociedad (9m)
7. Pepe - Real Madrid -> Besiktas (free)

Serie A :

1. Leonardo Bonucci - Juventus ->AC Milan (40m)
2. Andre Silva - Porto -> AC Milan (38m)
3. Juan Cuadrado - Chelsea -> Juventus (20m)
4. Wojciech Szczesny - Arsenal -> Juventus (12m)
6. Douglas Costa - Bayern Munich -> Juventus (Loan)
7. Dani Alves - Juventus -> PSG (free)

India :

1. Toni Dovale - Rayo Vallecano -> Bengaluru FC (free)
2. Abhra Mondal - Chennaiyan FC -> Bengaluru FC (draft)
3. Arindam Bhattacharya - Bengaluru FC -> FC Pune (draft)

Winners and Losers of the transfer window until now according to me:

Winners :
Manchester United
Real Madrid
Manchester City

Losers :
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Arsenal

Money as well as chance to be the main man in the team might have decided the decision. Apart from that, I believe, his father, who is also his agent might have had a big say in this. What I don't understand is, Neymar was going to be the main strike force in a few years for Barcelona, as Messi is ageing and is slowly moving into the midfield, taking up the role of Xavi, probably with a lot more goal scoring ability. The kind of service Neymar receives from Messi, cannot be matched. And to top it all, he is to receive a bonus from Barcelona for signing a contract extension last year. He was to receive it after July 1st.

In the short run Barcelona might be impacted by this, but I believe it would be a blessing in disguise in the long run. Barcelona became a dominant force because of its midfield and a lethal finisher in the form of Messi, well supported by other forwards. Of course one cannot class Messi into any one particular role, but he has been their top goal scorer for years. With Iniesta already waning because of age, it is time to shore up the midfield with the new found riches. Messi stil has 3 odd years to be a goal scoring machine, after which I believe he would become the playmaker in the midfield. There are rumours that they might target Griezzeman, who will be available in January apart from Mbappe or Dembele or Dyabala. Of course with all clubs knowing how rich Barcelona have become, the fees might just move higher from what it was before Neymar deal.

AC Milan needs a special mentioning here.. They have signed Bonnucci for 35m euros.. That, according to me, is the deal of the season.

You are mentioning Arsenal in the Losers section based on what activity actually? They just broke their club record and signed Lacazette for 52m and have decided to keep Sanchez and Ozil.

How is that a loss I don't understand?

Re: The Football Thread

James Rodriguez, a super talent joined Bayern on a 2 year loan! Awesome deal. Bayern also not really losers in this window.

Yes I should have added that. AC Milan are actually doing pretty well after their takeover.

Actually its my mistake. Because I had compiled this in my phone, I had by mistake typed Arsenal in the losers section and copied it here without correcting.

Yes Arsenal have done fairly well. I believe they should still shop around for a good defense.

@madhavgpai : Bayern have got James (a talent he might be but yet to prove . After all he has had not so good time at Real Madrid). Last heard Vidal is looking to move back to Serie A , Renato Sanches might move as well. They might not need to buy if you take their domestic competition but they have been wanting in CL. So I put them in losers section.

But its in my perspective which may differ and please do share them here.

Personally, the most heart wrenching move till date!! I almost felt the same way I did when I watched Sachin's retirement telecast

But then again:

No single player/star is Bigger than the Club.

But after seeing Rooney's performance yesterday, I feel like Man Utd have made the right call..
