Red hat/Ubuntu/Gentoo, it does not matter where your binary is created. A Redhat system with gcc 2.9.x gcc will run all programs created on ubuntu with gcc 2.9.x. Its the libraries which matter. In that respect linux has been pretty homogenous.
Most of the mission critical servers are either redhat enterprise or Debian.
