Apparently the show was a disaster for the organizers (DNA). In Bangalore, only about 2500 people attended (compared to 15000+ during Maiden and Machinehead).

This is a classic example of trying to force a correlation. A result of unscientific statistics that people in market research do. Album sales 10 yrs back, need not translate to huge number of attendees.
A 19 yr old will travel across the country to watch an Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Black Sabbath. No one is traveling even 10 blocks to watch Backstreet boys. Passionate pops followers are VERY rare (probably the 2500 odd that attended the concert).

Sweet! The organisers deserve it!

As you rightly pointed out, metalheads are a loyal and passionate bunch. We travel across cities just to watch a show and we love our music. Proof: Artists like Iron Maiden and Ozzy are still playing to sold out arenas all across the world since the late seveties till present date. At a typical Maiden show, you'll see folks ranging from 15 year olds to 60 year olds

Backstreet boys were just a fad, flavor of the month! The music they released (which wasn't composed or played by them) doesn't have the longevity to warrant a successful turnout to their re-union tour atleast here India.

True and I really don't believe that there is any passion in following the Pop music of the past 15 years. They are just songs that are one-hit-wonders or songs-that-are-played-so-often-by-mainstream-music-channels that they won't get out of your head - like a really bad idea!

The attendance has been the best news I've had in days!.

Very true about loyal metalheads travelling far and wide..to give an example -
I travelled all the way from Pune to Bangalore for just the show and came back the next day when Maiden first played in 2007. I listened to that great band back in 1993 for the first time and never ever thought that I would be able to see a live show (atleast in India)

I guess it shows the organisers the difference in the mainstream pop crowd and the metal crowd. 2500 crowd is a laugh...atleast 10 times that for the first Maiden gig!

@Abhay: In 2007 I was in my final semester in College. I, along with 15-20 guys, travelled all the way from Kharagpur to Bangalore. We had to bunk our labs, classes etc.
One of the best sights in my life, ever, was from that afternoon. Wherever you looked around on M.G. Road, you could see metalheads in band T-shirts. Tens of guys in black t-shirts

Coming back to Rock-n-India, I had always expected the turnout to be low. I was expecting them to just touch ~10k. I had no idea though, that pop music fades so fast, and to such lows.

wow! although I am not a big fan of that style its still metal, so might have to come down to Bangalore again

any other bands playing? Surprised that LoG are making the trip though..when the hell will Priest come down here?

(4) Opening bands: Don't know yet

I wish they bring the Ozzfest here! I watched an Ozzfest DVD where Sabbath w Ozzy were the headlining act. That performance was so awesome, I get goosebumps whenever I watch it.

I hope that even Mustaine brings his Gigantour festival to India, now that he's seen with his own eyes the kind of fanbase that India has.
