Given that they are 2 different brands, perhaps there's a higher chance of that happening rather than a family coordinating a sequential registration?

I would say same family. We have that here in the forum itself. Hemanth.Anand bought his Alto amt and gt tsi on the same day and coordinated to get consecutive registration numbers.

Played follow the leader with a white, older model Fortuner for at least a couple of hours on the Gujarat highway while returning from Udwada on Sunday. He had a 'driven by T-BHP' on his rear bumper and had to have noticed my own LTD on my rear end. No reaction from him when he passed me umpteen times told me he must have been a paid driver and his Seth sitting behind didn't notice me. Too bad.

On a serious note, that car can give a serious competition to anyone driving within a ton on any roads. With​ a short footprint, you can traverse into gaps and drive away.
