Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

My grandfather once purchased an Ambassador 40 years ago after a string of Austin cars.

My father learned to drive on this car. I am looking to find this car or atleast know if it still exists at all. The last information my father remembers is that it was sold to somebody in Surat.

How do I proceed if it is possible and worthwhile?

PS: I would use the RTO website but I Do not have the last 5 digits of the chassis number.

Re: Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

Since you have the car's reg. no.; you could find out the RTO it is attached to. And then, you could trace the owner.

The very fact that you are thinking about the car indicates that the car has sentimental value; so obviously, the effort would be worthwhile.

I don't know if the process of finding the owner is legally and morally correct but I sure can anticipate it is going to be tough. Some contacts and money will help you get that info.

Just be prepared to find the car in whatever shape it might be in and with however kind of owner it might be with.

Re: Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

Are you suggesting that searching for a car through RTO is illegal?

Is it possible to know whether the car even exists anymore or not before jumping into the lengthy procedures?

Try getting hold of some agent who has contacts inside RTO Ahmedabad. Surely, the car's last known owner can be traced.

Re: Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

The reasons for me posting here were.

1. To know whether dealing with finding cars at the RTO is a herculean task.

2. Maybe there was slight chance, a Surat Team-bhpian can be helpful.

3. Since it is a 1950's (don't know really) model, will I have trouble transferring the ownership to Ahmedabad again?

BTW: I see my Pulsar 180 everyday. Hurts to see how it is now used to lug goods around. and how it has lost its shine. :(

Hi Devarshi... I also have similar passion for my father's first Standard Herald however as mentioned by others, its an herculean effort to find the last owner and probably that might not be the end if the car has changed hands without processing of RTO documents. Its definitely worth every penny if you are able to find the car but the probability seems low. Your thread has actually motivated me.

Re: Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

The original questions still remain. Can I get the car passed by Ahmedabad RTO?

Re: Finding GJA 1316 HM Ambassador

Hi Devarshi,

No. You would not be able to register the car in A'bad. You could do it on the outskirts though. Sanand/ Bavla etc.

There is a diffrent registration procedure ( i believe) for Classics / Vintage cars. You "might" be able to get your car registered in A'bad that way. I dont know the workaround on that though.

All the best for your search.

Thank you very much. Will a 60 year old Amby be considered vintage?
