Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Hi all,

I know there's a separate thread for adoptions and I've posted on that as well, but posting here for increased visibility.

Adoption Alert for Guppy!

We're presently fostering him and he's very friendly with our dogs, always looking to play with them.

Do share in your circles to help him find a home!

Need help with a stray

Folks, there is a year-old stray dog on our street which is suffering from a problem. The problem is it starts scratching its left ear vigorously with its hind leg and shakes the head as if throw off something that is stuck in the ear. At the same time its whines and cries. This happens for 5 to 10 mins. Poor thing looks like it suffers a lot during this period. Then it becomes calm again and sleeps off. I suspect something in the brain that is causing or something deep inside the ear. But I might be grossly wrong. The dog is well built and healthy. Except for this suffering.

I thought it might be worms and gave a 7-day deworming schedule as suggested by a vet. But no avail. Even gave a topical skin treatment for worms. That did not help either. Problem is it is very difficult to take it to a vet since it is a stray. I feed it with dry cat food that I feed my cat with, and neighbors feed some milk and meat.

Any idea what could be the problem and how can I get it treated? Thanks

First off, you are a wonderful person for feeling pity for and taking care of strays. Thank you for your kindness.

This problem seems to be a ear infection. It is very possible to solve it with ear drops.
Simple antibiotic ear drops usually used for humans, will help.
But someone has to hold the dogs head and someone has to drip the ear drops into the ears and let it penetrate. After a few minutes he can be let off. Yes he will struggle a bit and afterwards will shake his head but by then the ear drops ought to have gone deep. Dogs usually understand when someone is going to help them.

Here is the ear drops picture. Its only some 22Rupees. If this is administered twice a day for 5-6 days I believe there will be a lot of relief for the poor animal.
The only other option is to muzzle him and take him to the vet for an ear cleaning, using forceps and cotton wool soaked in hydrogen peroxide to help remove debris. They may X Ray the ear too, to rule out anything else.
I ll be happy for you to PM me and I ll contribute to the cost of this if you want to take him to the vet.

Thanks for the suggestion. Money is not the problem for me to take it to vet. Since it is a stray, it is difficult to take it to vet. I do not know how to handle dogs and the dog also might be uncooperative at the vet even if I take it.

I will get the drops you have shared. And see if one of the neighbors with whom the dog is extra friendly with, can administer the drops.

I have one doubt. This problem is there for months now. Can an ear infection persist for months?

Yes ear infections if untreated can persist. Especially with the damp and all the bacteria and fungal growth can worsen. Poor thing lives outside. The problem gets aggravated. This can also be ticks and fleas and pests inside the ear. But definitely I think the ear drops will give some relief. Poor thing.

I am dimly remembering...

There is a problem with tiny creatures called ear mites. They cause terrible itching. Does anyone know any more?

Highly possible.
If yes then first try ear drops. And after the ear drops a dusting of special tick/ flea powder after some time.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Hi guys,
I found an abandoned kitten in my apartment basement parking. Got it to the vet and looks like it is healthy 40 day old.
Please let me know if any of you or someone you know wants to adopt a kitten.
Usually there is no one at home to take care of it and I also have allergic asthma (cat hairs are a common trigger). Hence I cannot keep it.

Re: Team-BHPians and their Pets

Mr Stripey. Clearly originally of an excellent bloodline.
Born outside my house in Jan 2021. A litter of 7 pups.
Our fellow member Bibendum and I took 4 of them to my friends house in Coorg in my Thar. The Thar’s first use was a puppy rescue mission.
2 pups went off to a neighbour's farm in Hosakote.
The last chap, Stripey I kept here to be with his Mum - both of them live on our street and come home daily for their lunch. This photo was taken just now. Jan 2023. He has since grown into a big dog. Kind hearted and gentle fellow.

Hey Shankar, the Thar was put to its best use in giving these little fellows a home. Well done

Mr. Stripey looks rather pensive, shy and/or sad in this photograph. Maybe he was feeling cold.

All the best!

Cheers

He specialises in looking sad. He is a nice good natured chap. Being a big dog he has a good appetite so we ensure he gets some chicken and rice daily. And other neighbours ensure he gets pedigree and various other kinds of food.

That's a lovely skin (color) he's got.

On a side note, guys I hope you get (or got) the mother(s) spayed as soon as possible.

Yes. The mother is spayed. She cannot handle any more litters as she is quite a delicate thing.
