As they grow older, you will see more of 1&2 and less and less of 3.

Reminded me of my Alsatian twins, one of them was an aggressor and aptly named Rambo as well, while his brother was the passive, lovable guy.

Our 6 yr old bullmastiff passed away in the night yesterday. Because of a facility like :*
http://peopleforanimalsbangalore.org/petcemetry.php we could give her a decent burial.

She is not there waiting for me in the morning is something i will have to get used to. She was with us for the last six years, including all our journeys in the car, wherever we went. Now there is the sign outside the house that says "beware of dog" and our memories.

Dear Viju,
Heartfelt condolences..

I can feel your pain, because a few days ago I lost my dog too.

All we are left with are fond memories of our beloved pets.
Let us cherish those and remember them for years to come.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Very sad, Viju and Monaro.

Even after several months, I opened the front door this morning and the garden seemed empty without my cat to greet me.

They are friends and family to us.

Sad to hear viju. It can be really painful to lose a soul close to the family.

Noob question from a would be dog owner!

I'm preparing myself to be a first time dog owner and eager to welcome home my new k9 companion. I wish to make this experience a pleasant one for both me and my dog. I have shortlisted some books on the same topic by Ian Dunbar, Ceaser Millan, Monks of New Skete etc.. and i understand that all they follow different methods in achieving the goal of a well trained puppy. Some enforce the dominant theory and others differ from this. Being a new would be dog owner i'm confused as to which one to follow and Ceasar Millan seems to be very popular. Can experienced dog owners please tell me what kind of training they have followed and recommend? Please recommend a book too!

Its a Rottweiler puppy that i'm bringing home.

Hey, for some reason I don't own a Dog now, but I have had atleast three till now. Rotts are known to be ferocious and the need for discipline training is very important. While you could have it done on ur own, I would recommend that u opt for a professional training from institution. It would be for 8 weeks following which u can take care. If you plan to show him/her you would need to opt for additional training.
Btw what his/ her name.

@sankar : in all my time, all ive trained my dogs for is potty, and how to not bite.
other than that, free rein.
but this might be skewered by the fact that the biggest dog ive ever kept is a spitz.

a rottweiler, eh?
wait, ill update you in a bit.
my wife is a behaviourist, lemme ask...

I have not yet brought the puppy home. Would name him once he gets home. Rotties are known to be ferocious but then it depends on how its trained and socialised. I plan on getting him socialised very well, i don't want to make him aggressive not even to strangers. I only want him to be defensive if threatened. No shows are not planned.

Thanks mayankk.

I don't want him on a free rein, that'll be a disaster with a big dog! If given all the freedom to do as he please then i wouldn't be able to control him once he's grown up. I'll be water skiing on the ground with him pulling me like a speedboat

Ah! Lets bring some joy here now. Those who lost their kitties and pups, please go out and adopt or get another one right away! Dont delay it, the feeling of remorse will only get worse!

Here's what my little one is upto. Apparently she's training to be Santa's helper elf this year.

Hehe.. books are for me to digest
Have decided to go with Patricia Mc Connel's book for now. The reviews are good.

I read about your lost cat, i know how it feels like. Until now we've been mostly a cat family and have had many cats over the time. Most of them were born here. Right now we have a 2 year old tom cat, dad calls him Raghu. We had a mom cat and her kittens with us till 2009, she left when i was in the hospital and no one was at home for extended periods of time. All of our toms would wander away once they've grown up, some came back after few days and some didn't. Some came back stayed for couple of days and then vanished without a trace. Now Raghu is the only tom cat who has come back even after being away for like a week. He wasn't home yesterday, guess he'll be today. Thats how he is. Will post a pic once i get home!

Hope that Rottie and Raghu would get along well

This dude left one day not to come back again.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Hey guys any particular tips for how to make it easy for my Labrador ( 7 years now) to adjust to our new home? We partly shifted yesterday and took him there for the first time. The poor guy had a terrible time there and the whole night I kept calming him down. He even pissed in the house 2-3 times( didn't scold him for it though I am scared if he might make it a habit). First thing in the morning I got him back to our old apartment and he is happily been sleeping since morning. Now I am slightly unsure as to how to progress from here. I am trying my best to maintain his walks and meal times plus we took all his things in the new home but he wasn't much interested in them.

Please use the services of a professional dog trainer for breeds like Rottweilers. These are essentially attack guard dogs and are genetically predisposed to attack.

Genetic modifications over the generations have resulted in somewhat more sedate behaviour capable for domestication.

Ensure you provide enough exercise and activity for your Rott. pup from the beginning, else he will tend to become bad tempered. Instilling discipline in the pup will ensure he will remain manageable when he grows up.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Sugeeta, i have read the same about excercising and activity for the dog's mental and physical well being. I plan to follow an excercise schedule on a regular basis for him and me. I would like to take him for walks once he's ready for it. How do you train the dog for it? And will it be safe to take him out on the road? How do you make it possible? Self training or employ trainer?

This is Raghu, our present tom. The pics were taken some months ago, he's not regulalry seen here at home these days but usually comes home once in two or three days at the max. Was out of home for a week once and we thought we had lost him too. My Dad was a cat hater but now he is changed and raghu is his pet
