Help!

Hello guys!

I'm facing a very big problem here. My 8 year old cat has taken sick since the last few days. He's been losing weight. Fast. The thing is, he is hungry, feels like eating, but whenever I bring the food to him, he moves away. Initially I thought it was a toothache or decay which may be keeping him from chewing raw fish, so I tried giving him milk, but he isn't drinking milk either!

I also tried force feeding him the milk through a syringe, but to no avail.
He was given a couple of shots from the vet too, but there's still no improvement; infact, his condition is deteriorating. And now diarrhea!!

Spoke to the vet again this morning. He's told me to feed him 2.5 ml of Gelusil which I did(again through the syringe). Gonna wait till the evening. If his situation does not improve, I might have to admit him!

Is there anything else I can do to save my cat? Help me fellas!

Have you done a blood test? What do the results say? Or have you put in shots without running any tests?

Some suggested reading material: http://www.assistfeed.com/FelineAnorexia.htm

Thanks a ton Red Liner for the reply!

Spoke to the vet in the evening again. The cause of the problem wrt the symptoms stated is assumed to be gastric, however, I'm taking him to the clinic tomorrow noon to get to the root of it.

Thank you for the helpful links too

True. Looks cute. She's got a black & white friend too, but the other one doesn't come near me at all. I will try to post the pics of the other one, if I can get one soon.

New Sanghvi. But these are a bit old pics, and there are a few updates. Unfortunately the mom (in the first pic) is no more. There were 4 kittens, one was adopted and the other three have grown up and they roam around the locality. They only come to my place when hungry.

:( Remember the same happening to my cat when I was a kid... we lived in a village back then, the vet was a government vet whose job was to take care of buffalos and cows - he simply gave up and my cat didn't survive. I am sure yours will - give him lots of care and attention. A possibility - poisoning (cats always get into fights with snakes). Another possibility, though remote in your case, is that the cat is simply upset over any changes/out of the ordinary stuff happening at home or with its owners. Have you been away from him for too long? Has any major change taken place at home?

Do keep us posted, and we all hoep he gets well soon!

Has a vet actually examined your cat?

It is really important that they do. Your hunch could be right: an infected tooth can make a cat seem at death's door. It is not just the pain in the mouth or physical difficulty with eating, it is the toxins from the infection affecting the whole body.

A friend and I took her elderly-lady cat to the vet once, really fearing that we would not be bringing her back alive. The vet looked inside her mouth, yanked out a tooth ... and she was sprightly again by the time we reached back home. A really dramatic recovery.

Another thing that can have a huge effect on health is an ear infection. Another cat I knew seemed about to die. She actually lost her inner ear, things were so bad. Being half deaf is better than being dead. She's still alive, ten years later!

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Finally an pet owner stands up for what is right!!
Respect for him
And Poochie R.I.P :(

His pet dog died on the operating table. He grieved a lot of course, but was not ready to just bid a tearful adieu. Instead, Ricky Kej, a Bangalore-based musician, filed a case of negligence and malpractice against two vets, who were treating the pet, and the veterinary hospital, making it the first such complaint registered in the state.Check the link below for details.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Giving away an old and frail pet is a criminal thing to do. Better to put the poor thing down because if the dog is given away at this late stage it will only cause terrible suffering and feelings of abandonment. This is most definitely NOT on!

I second that opinion. The emotional suffering that the poor fellow undergoes can be more painful than the physical ailment.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

It can be done. My late mother's dog was found a new home when she died.

In fact, she got it through an organisation specialising in finding homes for just such animals, and finding them new homes when that became sadly necessary. Good people, and they knew what they were doing.

All options should be explored before an animal is killed. Hats off to anyone who is prepared to adopt an animal that is certainly going to bring them problems and vets' bills; they must be an angel. If angel, then the dog will probably settle with them.
