Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

I am planning to give away my lone oscar in an attempt to set up a planted tank again. Though I am not so keen on it, I have tremendous pressure from family as they are complaining about the tank being too dull with no plants or such. Hence, if any member is interested in it, please contact through PM. I want a good home for it. It is around five inches long with red spots and is free of diseases, rashes, scars or other defects.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

dude that's sad to hear. Cant you hold on to him for a few more years? Oscars are like the dogs of the aquarium. They get real attached to you and show awesome personality when they are grown up.

Show some videos on youtube to your family and convince them. Trust me you will not be disappointed. I got my first Oscar in 2002 and had him till 2011 till he died. Still miss him.

Though i am one to loath this, you can try putting fake plants to get some colour in your tank. Dont buy the cheap ones as they will look tacky. try the ones from oceanfree. they look almost natural.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

This is the second oscar that we have kept with us. My dad was in love with the first one as it was very active and as you say, it was like a dog, recognising us, reacting ferociously with kids and entertaining everyone. I gave it in order to give it a bigger home. It went into a pond where it is still living fine. Howevef, this one is not so much admired by my folks. My relatives too commented that the tank has lost its charm. Hence, folks are suggesting to change the setup. When I gave away the previous oscar, they were unhappy and I was happy. Now its the opposite. Coming to artificial tanks, I dont prefer them. Hence, if anyone can take good care of it, I would be happy to hand it to them. I can give it to my aquarist, but he is more money minded and will make a good deal out of it. Hence, I can give it to someonefor free if they can take care of it.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Currently have a 3x2x2 Fish Tank. Have 2 Pairs of Silver Dollar, 1 pair of 3 Spot Gouramis, 1 pair of Tiger Barbs, 1 Pair of Iridescent Shark , 1 no Koi and 1 Pair of Sucker Fish. For a tank of my capacity are the above quantity fine or is it too crowded? Planning to give away the shark and get another pair of tiger barbs.

Have a 1200L/H Internal Filter to which have attached an Air Pump. Can this filter be switched off at night or need to be running 24/7?

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

@ gearon: assuming the fishes are still small, your tank may not be crowded. but bear in mind that, silver dollars, sharks and kois get very big and are best kept in ponds. barbs are amazing fishes and remember larger the school lesser their tendency to fin nip other fishes in the tank.

and as for the filter, best run it 24hrs non stop. will not use much of power anyway.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

Made a nice logwood for my upcoming setup. Carved this out of a branch of tree that was chopped off at my grany's place and was lying in the sun for more than a year. After repeated carving and sanding, I was able to remove soft matter and leave only hardwood so that once it is in the tank, it wont start disintegrating. What started as a plain branch, ended up in this:

It will be washed further and then a proper coat of lacquer if required.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

that's a nice piece of wood

coat of lacquer would be harmful for the fishes?

boiling it is the best way to go.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

I have female black labrador. She's going to turn three on the 14th. Got her when she was 2 and a half months old. She comes from a healthy family. Her father is a black lab whereas her mother is golden.

Not able to boil it as it is too huge. However, treating it with boiling hot water and keeping it dipped. As I have cleaned it previously, I am not seeing any colour change or rotten matter. If this continues, then no need of coating. However, if the wood starts discharging colour, then I will get a coat of polyurethane. Once dried and cured, I dont think its a problem for the fosh. As of now, I dont think it will be needed.

Re: Team-BHPians and their pets

So my neighbor's cat has had it's first litter last month. Thankfully all three survived and have finally started moving around when their mom's not around.

As of now, I'm not spending too much time around them as they are still tiny and need their mom for all needs. But the next few weeks/month are surely going to be a lot of fun!

The litter consists of
  • 1 white + brown spots
  • 1 black
  • 1 chocolate brown

Till then, here's a picture of one of them. Will be posting more pictures as and when the opportunity and time permits!
